I am currently working on a project to get more jiapu access online. This will be a website designed to provide genealogy research enthusiasts an interface to view, search, navigate, index, describe and share genealogical related material. Whilst the interface would be in Chinese, I still believe it could be useful to users of this forum. We are hoping this will be a lasting website and so are researching ways to make this website successful. I would welcome input from people who are interested. We have put up a survey online (it’s in Chinese) and if you could spare a few minutes of your time to help us out it would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Please describe more about your project. Using Google, the translation leaves some to be desired and I am not sure if I answered your questionnaire appropriately.

Hi Doug,
First, apologies for the delayed response and thank you for filling in the questionnaire. I will tell you a bit more about the project but please let me know if you have any specific questions and I will do my best to answer them.
We are looking to have specific tools to help users preserve and update their jiapu. We want to help index jiapu as well, in order to make it easier to find information within the document and help with ways to share your family’s jiapu with friends and family. As jiapu styles can vary widely we also want to give users them ability to use the different methods to displaying their jiapu.
Hope that helps ☺

The jiapus are usually in Chinese characters as analog images. The various libraries have images of these books (Latter Day Saints, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Columbia).
To digitize them is laborious and/or expensive.
Do you have a Chinese OCR which can help? Otherwise someone has to manually index them, again laborious and/or expensive.
What has been the response to your project? Being in Chinese, I assume you have a Chinese audience.
The only digital jiapu I have seen (besides my own) is from my cousin in Shanghai, who manually transcribed it into MS Word.
Are you going to compete with MyHeritage.com, Ancestry.cn, and Geni.com?
Will you be using GEDCOM 5.51 to upload?
Just a few questions off the top of my head for now.

We are very aware of the challenges, the laboriousness and the expense. And yes we would be in competition with other websites.
As for the response to the project so far, most people are interested. Though older users think the project is unfeasible and therefore is unlikely to move forward, whereas younger people tend to be slightly more optimistic.
Some aspects of the project are confidential, and so I am afraid I cannot answer all your questions (i.e. what software we will be using) but ask a way and I will do my best. Also, as we are in the initial stages of the project, we expect things to evolve as the project continues. Feedback from users such as yourself with regards to the value of particular desirable traits for such a website, will impact the final design and would be greatly appreciated.

As a clarification, GEDCOM 5.5.1click is the universal standard for sharing computerized family trees last modified the previous millennium.
