Douglas Lam - when will you be in Guangzhou? We're leaving Auckland 31 October - 6 days there - will be in a tour for those days, then extending up to 2 weeks.

Helen, my leave commences on 4 Nov. I'll probably fly out on the 5th for HKG, from there I'll join a tour to Taiwan. Everyone I talked to recommended a guided tour for value for money. I am not afraid of going alone, just that I'm a little unsure of where to go and how. A guided tour would take care of that. Not sure when I'll be in Guangzhou. I look forward to meeting you and Lap Chi in China. You are both invited to my little dinner party in my village. And I'd like to join you to visit Gwa Leng schedule permitting. Douglas
Douglaslam mentioned an incident in Tang Dynasty where the emperor suspected a general name Xue/Sit 薛 of betrayal, a serious crime, and ordered the death of the general and his 9 related families, common practice in those days, which included all members of his father's family, his aunt's family, his sister's family, his daughter's family, his maternal grandparents' families and his in-laws families. Many of the Sit/Xue family went into hiding and changed the surname to Situ. To this day, some Situ clans pay their respects to the Sit/Xue ancestors.
Hi, was this from a post on the board? I've tried using search but can't seem to find it.

Hello Everyone, I'm back with a question.......... When I take my grand nephew to visit my dad's grave in October, should I bring incense and candles to light? Do we only burn paper money on special occasions? When is the next Ching Ming-like ceremony for the dead? I'm getting nervous............

Fay Chee, It needs not be elaborate. Just three incense would do well. You may find 土地公 God of the Earth's altar on the ground, it is customary to place incense for the Earth God first. You may also want to place incense for your father's "neighbours," even just one each will do nicely.

Hi Douglas, Thank you for answering my questions. I may have more later. I will post photos of our meeting and our trip to dads grave. Hopefully I'll meet his mom and dad next. Fay Chee

there should be an urn/receptable built into the grave that you put the incense into. at least thats the way they are customarily built in HK at my grandfathers grave
you dont have to write anything on the red pocket. i dont think its taboo or anything but its normal for it to be just blank. although i do have one uncle that always gives extremely cute red pockets such as snoopy ones for the year of the dog etc

I think FayChee meant she had forgotten when she stored the incense from last time. There is nothing wrong with writing "Love Auntie" on the envelop. It would be very thoughtful of you to make it more personal.

I almost can't breath in anticipation...........this is the first Chinese family member since my dad died in 1953 and I only have one memory of him at age 2, when he came home from work....reached into his overcoat pocket....and handed me a tiny 'Chiclet' box with 2 chiclets in it.

So I was looking over a family tree that I drew up in high school, and started looking at wikipedia and a few genealogy sites. I saw something on wikipedia about the Diaolou that was named after the 司徒 surname and that caught my attention. Could anyone help me out?
What I know: -My mom's side of the family is 司徒 (anglicized to be Seto for my mom and Situ for the rest of her side of the family) -My mom's mom is named Shou Zhen Kwan (关 I think) - lives in SF -My mom's dad is named Yong Ti Situ - never met because he passed away before I was born -My mom once told me a story that he was one of the soldiers who helped defend against a few Japanese soldiers (this is what piqued by curiosity) -Grandma's parents are Tou Di Zhou and Wei Xin Kwan -Grandpa's parents are Juan Wu and Xin Guo Situ -Mom speaks Kaiping dialect. I understand but cannot speak now. -I don't know how villages/districts/municipalities work in China. My mom has mentioned Check Hom specifically though.
will ask my mom tonight for proper characters if I remember.
