Henry,
Live and learn. As a young person, I learn from this. Thanks Henry for bringing a smile to this Southerner's face. Nothing the Congressman's Spin Staff wrote is incorrect per se. Well done Congressman.
Back in our patch, the gov of the days from many "civilised countries", but I think started by "Great" Britain, forced the gov of our ancestors to buy a legal drug, in exchange for high class tea. Spin or not then, it was considered by the Westerners to be the right thing to do. Send in gun boats, if these Celestials are not civilised to trade with us.
Funny thing is, the same commodity resulted in the Boston Tea Party. I am no historian, but perhaps the Chinese cursed on GB, to the point that they lost a great colony.
And the tea sellers (or sons of opium smokers?), well, almost every Christmas toy is made by them.
By the way, in going through our Public Record Office, I stumbled onto a brand of top-class Opium, from Hong Kong (originated by India of course). Got a picture, worth a few dollars to me at least.
Believe it or not.
Regards, Ah Gin

Ah Gin,
Wikipedia says the Boston Tea Party took place at December 16, 1773 and the first Opium War was 1839 to 1842.

Thanks Woodson for pointing out my mistake in historical milestones. I should go back to school. Should have picked that up myself, as I vaguely know that Independence of the US was 17something, and indeed the Opium War was in the 18something. Meanwhile, a Google of Congressman etc. yielded amongst other thins this www.truthorfiction.com/rumors/r/remus-reid.htmSo the question is, is it fact of fiction, or it is another clever way by the spinners? All the same,, I love the clever use of the language of the said spinners. Regards, Ah Gin

Hi Ah Gin,
Thank you for checking on the veracity of this information, Snopes also confirms that this information is false and was also attributed to other political figures - what makes this information so believable is the character and behavior of these well known political people.

All the same Henry, it is such a believable piece of work -- almost like an art of spinning, fact or fiction, still brings a smile to this old fellow.
