I am an old gid of 70+ eagerly trying hard to conserve a hand written ancestral book for future generations who no longer read or write Chinese. As yet I do not have any genealogy software but have as of yesterday posted on this forum for specific recommendation(s). I have read here the use of Excel spreadsheets to format a linkage seem a good start for preservation. Not having use Excel much in my entire life, I will be very grateful if “Chumley”, “Philip of KL, Malaysia” or “Ah Gin of Melbourne” can send me a sample of what was described in writing. As Doug quite rightly said ‘a picture is worth a thousand words’, especially for a beginner like me with limited days to the used by date. Please if any of you can recommend software which will: (1) accommodate entries of multiple spouses and their issues, (2) it must entertain the input of English/Chinese [cut and paste or writing pad] on the same page and as a bonus (3) accept photo uploads. Many thanks in anticipation. Email address: sarcceng@hotmail.com

Lukluk,
Let me have your email. I will forward you examples of my spreadsheets I did for creating the pedigree line for vertical display and that done horizontally more suitable for recording the whole tree .

Thank you Ah Gin for your samples of how Excel can be used for data entries. Thank you Philip, I look forward to your example on how Excel can be used in this project. My Email address is: sarcceng@hotmail.com My having the current and future generations in mind, I would prefer to have all Chinese written and recorded horizontally instead of the old traditional vertical right to left format. Also I find it much easier to transcribe the different Chinese characters side by side (simplified)[Cantonese] horizontally. Eventually I am hoping that they may be able to be printed out as a book or booklet (maybe being too ambitious here). As I am only a beginner here, any and all suggestions will be gratefully received.

lukluk,
Once the data is captured on Excel (and indeed in any computer legible form), you should be able to print out in any way you wish. You can choose any fonts to your taste, ie, some of the Chinese character fonts really look "cool" to use a young people language. There are plenty of IT experts on this forum to further share with you the way ahead on what is the best font to use.
Have fun.
