Hi my name is Rossana Ditangco, I am hoping to trace our family roots in China. According to my Dad, my great grand dad was from Amoy China. Our family name is Ditangco, I do not have any idea what was the original name of my great grand father. My grandfather was born in the mid 1800s. He married my grandmother (who was 35 years old then) when he was already 70 years old. My great grandfather married a woman from the Palma family in Manila (hence my grandfathers name is Pablo Palma Ditangco). My grandfather was an only child and we have no further information about his father because my grandfather ws quite old when my father was born such that my father had very little knowldge about his grandfather. Hope you could help me.

Hi Rossana,
Welcome to the Forum.
Do the gravestones of your grandfather and great grandfather have Chinese characters inscribed on them? If so, please post them on the Forum. Generally, the name of the person , dates of birth & death, and name of ancestral village, county & province of China where he was born are noted. But, if you have any Chinese names or Chinese village names written on letters & envelopes or immigration documents - this would be quite helpful.

Dear Henry,
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately the gravestone of my grandfather has no Chinese characters. My father has no idea where his grandfather was laid to rest. According to my father, his father did not tell them anything about their grandfather except that he has a Chinese blood and his wife has Spanish blood (from Palma family). One story that my uncle remembered was when he was young, a store owner in their community by the name of Dy Tac mentioned that they may be related. I hope my search is not coming to a dead end

Hi Henry. It is me again Rossana. The name of the store owner was Dee Pac and not Dy Tac. According to my uncle, my grandfather did not know how to speak Chinese. He could speak Spanish.

Hi Rossana, If the store owner was "Dee Pac", then "Dee" was probably his surname. if you take a look at this link: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_common_Chinese_surnames which lists the common Chinese surnames - you will note that under rank # 1, the surname "Dee" is found as one of the variant spellings for the Chinese Li/Lee surnames. "Dee" is the spelling that is used by the people from Fujian province. So, if your great grandfather is related to Dee Pac - your Chinese heritage is from the Li/Lee clan. Try to find any documents from your family that have Chinese characters. if this is not possible, then try tracking down the ancestral village of Dee Pac, perhaps your great grandfather came from the same village, this is more than likely, as immigrants tend to do a "chain migration" through the help and assistance of people from the same village in terms of money and jobs in a new country. raditangco,
As Henry implied 9 months ago and what the people on this forum try to correct all the time is the mistake of newbie Chinese genealogist to emphasize phonetic spelling. You must really try to find Chinese characters.
Your best bet is to interview your closest relative and try to get images of Chinese characters. Besides gravestones (no characters as from your last post) consider return addresses on correspondences, wedding invitations, back of photographs and frames, and interviews of aunts and uncles.

Hi Rossana my name is Cypris, after seeing your post It interest me. My late grandfathers family was also from Amoy china, he was born in the province of Mindanoa (he was one of the only siblings that was born in the Philippines) and he was the youngest son of the family, but his dad brought him back ( just him and his dad) to Amoy when he was very young for a visit back in 1920 's and his father died shortly in their visit in Amoy, after numerous times of trying to get back the Philippines in his teens he succeeded but could not find the rest of his family.. Rumor is most of his siblings died but one older brother lived.

Hi I am Willie from Manila... my deceased maternal grandmother is a chinese mestiza from Iloilo (Visayan island). When she was still alive, she told me that her father's name is a certain Yuco Gan from Amoy, China... That's why when my grandmother was still single, their family adopted the family name GANYUCO. Is there a possibility of tracing some surviving relatives there?

hello! My name is Kendrick. I am looking my ancestors in Amoy, China, too.My great great grandfather is from Amoy, China. His name is Teng Yamco. He was born in Amoy in 1854. According to my relatives, there was a war in China and this is the reason why he sailed to the Philippines and there he met and married my great great grandmother. When he was in the Philippines, he changed his name into a Filipino name which is Jose Castro. Please help me find my ancestors in China.

Hi Kendrick,
Do you have a photo of the gravestone of great great grandfather Teng Yamco or of any of his male relatives with the same surname? Hopefully one of them had the name in Chinese characters and the ancestral village in Amoy (Xiamen) they originated from. Without them, there is minimal chance of you to be able in finding a connection with any descendants of your past ancestors in China.

Thank you for your response. Actually, I am in Hawaii right now and I'll still ask my relatives in Ilocos Norte to take a picture of the gravestone. Unfortunately, the gravestone is written in Spanish. I don't think if there is any Chinese character on it. I only remember that it has his birth date and the birth place. I'll just send you the picture of the gravestone as soon as I have it. Thank you for letting me know the new name of Amoy. This is because I am at an international school and I ask Chinese people here if they know about Amoy and they mostly answered "no."Thank you again.
