Hi Kendrick,
So your surname is 騰. You said your great great grandfather is from Amoy. Amoy, also known Xiamen, is a big city managed as a sub-provincial covering the districts of Huli (湖裡), Siming (思明), Jimei (集美), Tong'an (同安), Haicang (海滄) and Xiang'an (翔安). Without narrowing down further the particularly location where your great great grandfather was from and assuming your surname is indeed is 騰, it would be an onerous task to even locate whatever 騰 jiapu/zupu that exist from these areas, let alone trying to see if the name of your great, great grandfather is in one of them (i.e. if the guess of his name in Chinese characters are correct). I am afraid you will need to do more research to have any chance of finding your Chinese ancestry.

...I have a friend from China who helped me figure out the chinese characters of my great great grandfather's name... How did your friend figure out the Chinese characters? Did he compare your Fujian dialect and your local Tagalog or Spanish dialect? Can he surmise a list of village names for your surname? What Philip is implying is that to venture down the research pathway of comparing those Chinese characters with any published family tree booklets (and there is NO central repository of booklets) is like looking for a needle in a haystack. However, you will need to find which haystack first. If you have a high degree of certainty that what your friend wrote is truly your GG grandfather name (and we enter the conundrum of the multiple Chinese names common during that period. eg: Sun Yat-sen), then the next step is determining the ancestral village name. Look at chengkeikong’s postclick on how his barber declared he was from Zhongshan. Despite there are Chinese Genealogy members familiar with the area, he also needs to narrow down the village. This is impossible based on his anecdotal evidence. At least you have some Chinese characters. However, the accuracy of those characters is always better if they came from a written source. The Chinese language is rich in homophones.

Thanks for responding. My friend just guessed the characters. I don't think he did compare it to spanish because he only speaks chinese. He just suggested characters.

Sorry to disappoint you, but I would not pin my hopes on what your friend wrote based on phonetic spelling from years ago. My own surname has 86 different ways to write it based on the official Chinese romanization Pinyin. Fortunately, most people know the surname is written only one way out of all those 86 characters. Working out the given names will be impossible.
Hopefully your local elders can help. They may have photos with Chinese names on the back or margins. Also see if you can localize from your elders the ancestral village.
This gets back to basic genealogy; ie interviewing your elders and researching their artifacts and mementos.

Clint,
We have to refer to the previous advice in the other posts in this thread. You will also need more research material to trace your heritage. Have you started by recording the family tree of your relatives in the Philippines?

Jenny, From the gravestone, it says your grandfather's name was 施渊源 Shi Yuanyuan, he was from Jinjiang County 晋江县 Gantou Xiang 杆头乡which is in Fujian Province 福建.
Today, geographic locations have been reorganized, this is the new address
福建省 泉州市 石狮市 宝盖镇 杆头村 362714 Fujian Province, Quanzhou City, Shishi City, Baigai Township, Gantou Village 362714
The village is in Quanzhou, a city near Amoy/Xiamen.
Using Chinese version of Google Maps, ditu.google.cn , village location is given by the coordinates "24.7130, 118.6601".

Jenny, The villages in southern China tend to be occupied by a single surname clan or a handful of surname clans. It's almost always the case that members of the same surname clan descend from a common ancestor, so everyone is related to others in the clan.
All the info I gave previously was a result of internet search, without any contact with anyone in the village.
Do you speak the southern Fujian dialect or Mandarin, or know of someone who speaks either of the dialects and who can inquire over the phone on your behalf? If you do, I can look up a local government office phone nuber for you to inquire.

Jenny, What is your area of interest? Is it to locate near relatives who are still there or to locate your ancestral records or both? As your ancestral village is near to Xiamen, there are two possible alternatives that I could suggest. Alternative 1. I have a contact in Xiamen that used to help overseas Chinese in the search for ancestral villages/roots. I do not know whether she is currently overseas in US or back in Xiamen. I could email her to find out. My friend had used her to accompany him to his ancestral village in Fujian. She did not charge for her service. Through her I also have the contact of a driver who can take you around at a certain rate per day. My friend had used the driver to receive him from the airport and to drive him and the lady around. Another friend had also employed the service of the driver to drive his party of six to their ancestral village in Nan’an and other places. I understand he does not speak English but the lady does. Both could speak the local Fujian language, Mandarin and Indonesian. The lady could speak Dutch as well. In your case, I think it would be efficient that you get the lady to do the initial search first so as to establish initial contact with the information you already have. If successful then make a trip there yourself (if you so wishes) with other family members. Alternative 2. Use the services of “My China Roots” at www.mychinaroots.com/ as in the case of Nick in his search as he had recently explained in this Forum. I feel this alternative would be more professional in approach but the cost may be greater than Alternative 1. You are very lucky to have the information that you now have. In general I find those of Chinese origin from Philippines are not able to provide sufficient clues to determine their Chinese roots. I shall be following your search with keen interest. Philip

Hi! Good morning. My great grandfather, Mateo Roxas Lim, is Patricio Luis Lim's brother. They were born in formerly known Amoy, China (now Xiamen, Fujian, China). We do not know their Chinese names. Lolo Mateo was born in 1905 and Lolo PL was born in 1915. They migrated to Masbate, Philippines. It is here in the Philippines that they got married and started their families. Does anybody know of any Lim familes who migrated to the Philippines in the early 1900's? My family and I would be very grateful for any help and assistance. Thanks in advance!
