tigerm8n, Hope you have done your research to make the most use of your visit with this short preparation time. Have the names of your ancestors in Chinese characters and maybe some old photos. You need to indicate how you are connected. I am unsure of the wording in your post, but having relatives there will be helpful. Without known relatives, then approach the village chief or find your ancestral hall as a start. The goal (besides the pilgrimage) is to find a copy of your jiapu. Consider this beginner's Wiki: How to Start Your Chinese Family Heritage Researchclick. Write back about your experience. Have a good time! Doug

Hi tigerm8n,
As you are visiting your hometown in Yongchun (ÓÀ´º), I suppose you would be visiting your ancestral home there, if you know the name. If you can locate a few of your relatives (however distant) still living there, there is high possibility that you can find your zupu that was compiled within the last 15 years or so. My wife, (a Yu (Óà)), and I (a Chen (ê)) visited our ancestral place in Yongchun for the first time in August 2007 without the remoteness expectation to find our zupus. We were extremely delighted to be given ours upon getting there. My cousin¡¯s son (a Lin (ÁÖ)) who visited there a couple years later was given a complete set of 22 branches of Lin (ÁÖ) descended the one that first settled there. Forget about locating your jiapu there. It is likely they would have perished during the Cultural Revolution.
From your posting, I would guess that you are also from my part of the world. Before you go, find out from relatives the ancestral place of your Zheng (Ö£) (or Teh/Tay as it is called in Southern Fujian dialect) in Yongchun. Usually the older relatives would know.

tigerm8n,
A most important recommendation, if you own your jiapu, from one banana to another, is to have a relative locate your ancestor on the page. Also, ask your relatives to find the ancestor's biography section.
If you are having them interpret any of the text or biographies (a difficult thing for a modern Chinese because of the traditional characters and classical style of writing), record with a video camera on your telephone both their spoken words and where they are pointing to on the pages. There is NO WAY to take notes fast enough, and with just an audio recording, you will get lost on the lines of script.
Copy or image as many of your clan's jiapu as you can access. Don't just concentrate on the charts. The stories and biographies tell about your grandfathers personality AND might very well have information on your grandmothers, etc.
This is your chance to expand your family heritage research. As I have mentioned before, the jiapu with the details within, is the Holy Grail of Chinese genealogy.
IMHO

(something that i should have asked from my parents last time...)...was told that we are like many generations down the line (16 or 64) of the Zheng family (TAY). Hope to get more fact n understand more on their Jiapu in the next two days.

tigerm8n, If no one has mentioned this yet, be sure to have a digital camera with you. In case you do get to see your jiapu but can not get a copy to bring back with you, at least you can shoot a digital image of every page of the jiapu.
Under bright light, without the need of a flash, the process should be quite quick, even faster than photo copy, and you can review and zoom in each image to make sure the quality is good.

tigerm8n, Looking forward to your future updates. Regarding your jiapu, check this similar thread on a recent post. .....I was able to obtain a copy of my father's ancestry record ....looking for someone who can translate .... Unfortunately, jacquie buried this deep into a non related thread which makes it hard for newbies to find and learn from other experiences. If you are more of a DIYer, these two links from that conversation might be helpful: Wiki:Jiapuclick and Understanding Jiapu/Zupu for Chinese IlliteratesclickDoug

wow, finally recovered from the trip. Yongchun is a very nice n well design township with excellent lighting at night. It is about 2 hrs from Xiamen via bus for us, and the final moment after a nice Hokkien ' lunch' at one of the restaurant (yum yum - duck , n rabbit), we proceeded to my grandpa n dad old house...., it's about 15 mins away from Yongchun town, n there is an easy landmark with is like KFC , they copied it and called EFC (hahaa, ) from there there is no road access but walking distance of about 5 mins...and there it was my historical visit finally came...what an interesting sight for all of us...The 'Tay' (zheng) family old home is still there....n in good shape except the root top....n big too....notice that i am from the 21st generation of Zheng family root....wow!!!! anyone from Zheng family here?......managed to talk a bit with our oldest family member who is staying there think he said about 80+ old and fit old man, who can walk must faster than me...haha... , he is the closest one that is still alive and the rest of the family are younger between 2 - 60 yrs old. i will try to get the copy of the jiapu from my mom house this weekend n digitalize it if possible....n get someone to translate it when possible.!!!! let me sum it up, it's worth the hazzle to take the journey and wish i could spend two more days to get to know them...we try a feast to all the local zheng family there before we left the town....n i hope to be back in a few yrs time to recapture the moments.

Tigerm8n, I know the exactly the feeling of your excitement during your trip to Yongchun and that it is worth very cent. I felt the same when I first went there for the first time in 2007 to Xiaohu Nanshan (now know as Hushan) in Yongchun. I know what the duck dish you are talking about. It must be the duck in the black herbal soup. It is a very famous dish in Yongchun. I had it three times while I was there; twice in two different restaurants and once in my cousin’s place. I had never seen such huge duck drumsticks especially those provided in my cousin’s place. Stephen Lim (my first cousin once removed) and I will be going to Yongchun again next month (April 2012). I will be bringing back to my ancestral house in Yongchun the series of four genealogical charts (from Huang Di down to my children stretching 147 generations) that I had constructed based upon the zupu I brought back previously. Stephen had already brought back his Lim/Lin charts during his previous trip there. Tigerm8n, if your ancestral village is within Dapuzhen township, it is not far from Hushanzhen where my ancestral village is located. See the relative locations of Dapuzhen, Hushanzhen and Yongchun Town in the first map below. The second map is a blown-up map showing my ancestral village. Tigerm8n, if you have to pay to get your jiapu translated, I would suggest you should hold it first. Get the genealogical lineage chart done first. This can be done without much trouble if you just master the technique of going about it. Only when you want to get certain specific commentaries from your jiapu translated, after your know your lineage chart, you can then proceed to spend the money in translation. Tehsenhong, I know the places in Kuala Lumpur you mentioned in your postings; Bukit Cheras, Pasar Seni monorail, Plaza Rakyat. I would suggest that you get the name of your ancestral village from your uncle ‘Teh Tian San’. At his age, he should be able to provide you the name and address (in Chinese) of your ancestral village in Yongchun. As to surname Zheng clan associations, I doubt you are going to find your jiapu or zupu in any of them. Below is the start of a chart to the first Zheng, which I had compiled for a fellow Industrial Advisor to University Tunku Abdul Rahman when he attended the public talk on Chinese genealogy I gave last year at that university. It was also for a friend of Stephen Lim from Public Bank. Tigerm8n, I will be most interested to see how your pedigree lineage finally connects up with the chart above. Should you need any help in doing your chart, do drop me a line. Philip
