Hi, I'm needing help to decipher the chinese names on the back of these photos and translations. I'm listing the names via nciku for my family sheet. I can recognize the traditional chinese words, but not when it is written in a personalized style... Thanks for your help! Jeanie 1. On the top photo, I recognize that those are all the sons names. The third child must have died. I'm not sure how the daughters' names are written in traditional chinese. 2. I can recognize that the grandsons' name are listed, but need a translation for the remainder of the line under the oldest son. 3. Translation please for the remainder of the card. 4. All names are translated by pinyin.

Wow. Thanks so much Laohuaqiao! Thanks for the translation and the characters. Now, I can gather all the other names together on the sheet. I'm trying to figure out how to name my grandson...
On the same vein, I had another question regarding Chinese naming tradition. I noticed that my husband born in the states and his cousin born in China were all given the same generation name (in the third position). The same practice with their fathers. Whereas, the cousin in China named his children with the generation in the 2nd position. He was a businessman. His grandchildren's generation name is in the 3rd position. Their ancestral village has the word "luong/dragon" in it. Is this an optional regional practice of alternating the generation name position?
The other oddity is that the chinese names my children received from an elderly uncle from the same family is different than their cousin in China... The uncle immigrated to the US prior to 1920s...

The position of the generation character really depends on the character itself. Some just sound better in the 2nd position and others in the 3rd position.
For example, 建 means to build or develop (something), a transitive verb. Upon hearing it, one expects another character following, it sounds natural to be in the 2nd position.
龍 dragon is a noun. It can be in either position if the other character is also a noun. If combined with a verb or an adjective, then it's more natural to be in the 3rd position.

Now, I have another piece of the puzzle. Unfortunately, the relative who lived in China passed away. The rest of us are ABCs and illiterate in Chinese.
What's the significance of the times of birth and death being recorded so precisely?

In the old days in China, one of the most important information recorded for each person was his 生辰八字 (8 characters of birth time), from which year, month, day and time of birth can be deciphered. When a matchmaker tried to arrange a marriage, the information for the young man and woman would be compared for compatibility, according to the astrological signs.
生辰八字 originated from Book of I Ching, going back to the Zhou dynasty.
I would assume the same information was recorded for a person's death also.

How do I start a new thread or post on here? I can reply to other postings but can't see anywhere to start a new thread/topic. I have a Chinese family tree I need help transalating and some other Chinese papers I need to get translated. If someone can send me a message on how I can start a new post that would be great thanks

Thanks Doug I do not see the mark as read new thread or new post icons anywhere I go on the site. I see if in your image but the couloured bar is blank, I don't even see the search icon. What do I need to do to see it? Is this a browser issue? I am using firefox. D
