Forgot to mention I was able to help a Samoan lady, who also lives in NZ, find her gf's village in Toishan (Taishan) because her mother knew the name of the village (but not the Chinese script). That was the only time I succeeded.
As with a lot of others from Samoa, I am afraid you will have to live with the knowledge it is impossible to locate your gf's village until and unless you have some other clue.

Gordon Wu has referred me to a Chinese Historian who studies the migration of the Chinese from Guangdong to Aussie and NZ but may shed some light on this subject. Failing this, yes I agree I too have to live with knowledge my journey is impossible.

Cannot see how a “historian” knowledgeable in Australia and NZ Chinese immigrants would be able to help you (from Samoa) locate your ancestral village. The histories have no linkage with Samoa. The only way to find your ancestral village is to locate some written or verbal information within your own or extended family (Chinese side).
If you read through Ben Featuna’i Liua’ana’s article you will find the indentured Chinese to Samoa (they did not arrive via Australia or NZ) came from three regions in Guangdong Province: Siyi (Taishan and Enping), Sanyi (Panyu) and Shantou. The first two regions (Cantonese) are on the western side of the Pearl River Delta and Shantou (Min) is in northeastern Guangdong Province. While there was mention about Fujian Province the article did not provide any further information; I believe they may have been mistaken because those from Shantou (Swatow) spoke a similar dialect.
Your gf may have come from either Siyi or Sanyi since the romanzation of his surname was Ng because in the Min dialect it would have been Goh. That is as narrow a field as can be guessed at for the moment, but you still need a name of the village.
If you can find the book “The Chinese in Samoa, 1875-1985: The Dragon Came from Afar” by Nancy Tom in your local Auckland library it is worth reading through it to glean more insight about the Chinese who went to Samoa, but it will still not locate your gf's village. I have not been able to find this book in our library or through Amazon.

Thanks Twoupman. One of my uncles had a criminal record clearance ID number for my gf which he was issued when he arrived to Samoa and which my gf needed in order to visit NZ. Either my uncle or a relative in Samoa will visit the Registrar and see what can be found, don't know if we'll get anything but it's worth a go.

My cousin found her late mum's birth certificate and on it was my gf's birthplace as 'Tongkong' in China. Does this place exist? And are there any Ng's in this village?
Could it have been Hong Kong instead?
