Hi, my fiance and I are trying to find more about his genealogy. We only have very little information as his father died when he was young and his father's parents died when his father was little. What we know are that his ancestors migrate to North Sumatra, Indonesia in late 1800s from southern Fujian most likely, is surname is Ong in Hokkien written as 王 in Chinese, and we know his father's chinese name in hokkien dialect and we could not find the name written in chinese character.
With such little information, is it possible to find something?
Thanks!

emma, You will need more information. Glad you confirmed the surname. Try having someone image the gravestones for Chinese characters. You can also put a request on Find a Grave click. Interview his aunts & uncles, and descendents of his grandaunts & granduncles. You will always be surprised how much your elders and relatives know; it’s just that no one had previously asked them. If people stonewall you, consider having to prove yourself a serious family historian, not a gossip seeker. That usually means a gentle and respectful persistence. I hope that helps.

Hello Emma,
Medan is a very small town with very tightly knitted chinese community. Might worth to randomly browse for someone in facebook and medan. Ong probably would be adapted into Indonesian name such as Gunawan, Wirawan, Dharmawan, Wangsaputra or Wangsaputri (WANG).
Anyways, my grandfather was adopted in medan and until now I don't know anything about my real family. We adopted Lokman (strangely Liang/Leung) surname but was told that blood relatives from hongkong was once visited but he refused to accept them.
cheers, Bernard

I'm glad this is in English. I am assuming you do not reside in the US? Because I am looking for a Chinese immigrant who was 25 in 1941 when his daughter was born in Boston, Massachsette. Child, a daughter was born out of wedlock to Terry Ong and Dorothy May Stewart (real last name was said to be Felderman). If your Ong came to the U.S. And was anywhere near Boston during this time, any knowledge of Ong at that time is greatly appreciated. He was, unfortunately, arrested and convicted of 'fornication' and so he has a police record. He stayed in Boston for two years and paid his $3 a week through the police. Lived over a laundry that is now a freeway in Boston. Can't find him after that at all! Did he leave Boston? Did he have family? How did he get to the U.S.? Why were there Chinese in Boston then? What attracted them, desperately searching for who he was. Dna test done on ancestry. Got a hit but 5 to 8 generations back....so, back to China. Any Ong knowledge might be helpful and have you tried Dna tests for your search yet?

Hi Bernard, thanks for commenting!
I'm pretty sure his grandfather (his dad's dad) was an only child and his dad passed away in 2004. That's why he does not know practically any relative from his paternal side. His dad adopted the surname Ongseputra but I don't know if his family has been using this surname or it's just him who adopted this surname.
