Hi everyone I will like to seek your help in tracking down my ancestral home in Fujian. Unfortunately I am unable to get further information as my father who has recently passed away was born in Malaysia and his father (my grandfather) and great grandfather came to Malaysia when grandfather was very young in the early 1900. My grandmother - also Chinese was born in East Malaysia. Based on the written script (attached), I believe we are from either Shima Dajiang Shu she or Shi Xian Shu within Longxi district in Zhangzhou city (not sure) I will greatly appreciate it if you can direct me to someone in that area.

Lines 2-4 listed the 10 counties that once belonged to Zhangzhou. It noted that your grandma came from Haicheng 海澄 and granddad came from Longxi 龙溪.
Longxi and Haicheng have combined to form Longhai 龙海.
From line 1, what you are looking for is now 福建省 漳州市 龙海市 石码镇 Fujian province, Zhangzhou city, Longhai city, Shima township. I don't know what the last 4 characters on line 1 refer to.
Below are phone numbers for the 4 village administrations within Shima (I have not found the phone for the town government office):
龙海市石码镇 内社村委会 电话:0596-6522590
龙海市石码镇 登弟村委会 电话:0596-6523471
龙海市石码镇 蔬菜村民委员会 电话:0596-6522964
龙海市石码镇 高坑村委会 电话:0596-6522475
You probably won't reach anyone in the village offices who speaks English, so it's best to have someone who speaks Chinese to inquire for you.

Hi Robert,
I'm Shawn Lin and I'm trying to track down my ancestral village in Fujian as well. I was told by my eldest uncle who have passed away that we come from Longxi. I am 10 generation born in Indonesia. Our family has lost our jiapu last generation. My paternal side is 'Cina Benteng' (group of Chinese who have pretty much assimilated in Indonesia) and westernised so hence no importance was placed in keeping our Chinese ancestry and culture. I'm trying to prevent my family history being lost.
Maybe we have the same ancestral village. Can we get in touch and swap notes?

Hi Robert, I suppose the Minnan (Southern Fujian language) spoken in the video referred to by Tyuti1668 is that from Zhaozhou. I try to understand it and it appears to sound like a cross between the Fujian language which I am familiar with and the Chaozhou language. I could hardly comprehend on what was said. I quote another video also posted by Lin YF that I think is from Quanzhou, I could understand what was said.

... referred to by Tyuti1668 is that from Zhaozhou... Know someone from Penang? Their Hokkien is based from Zhaozhou dialect.

Tyuti1668,
Many now living in Kuala Lumpur are from Penang and some of my classmates in university were from there. I also find many in the food business here are from there. I could understand their everyday conversation quite well even though quite some of the words used are taken from Malay words. For example “kicked a stone” is “tat theo batu” rather than “tat theo cheo tau” as how my type of Fujian would say it. “Batu” is the Malay word for “stone”. People from Penang are known for their thriftiness and are very discerning. I understand that some manufactures, when launching a new product, would do so in Penang first. If it can be accepted there, it would likely be accepted elsewhere in Malaysia.

hi tyuti1668
I know a number of people from Penang and have some relatives there.
The Fujian language spoken in Penang as Philip mentioned have a lot of Malay words as well as their slang and phrases coined over the year. The tone is much softer rather than gutteral as well as musical. I love listening to them speak.
cheers

Hi This is the latest update after two year's of searching for my great-grandfather's home village. I have extended the search to both side that is Longhai and Matu, Sarawak. The home village as written by my late father is "漳州龙海大讲书社" Some people think it should be "市讲西社" as I believe there could be such place in Shima " 石码镇". A contact just came across a map that possibly showed "大讲书社" in the Yuzhenzhou island about 20Km away which in those days are quiet a distance to travel. My grand-father could have left China between 1855-1890. Appreciate any comments or advise.

Still not having any luck. I am now trying to contact anyone in Philippines as I understand that many people from that part in China went over to Philippines and then perhaps onward to East Malaysia where my grandfather and grandmother was born.

Hi bro, my great grand father came from Zhangzhou - Longhai city as well, The town name Gangwei (港尾镇), the village name Gucheng (古城村)
That's all i knew. I think we have probability to came from same area basically. My another great grand father (my ah-ma's father) came from Shima Town (石码镇) as well, and as i knew, Shima town already transform to urban area, named Shima Subdistrict (石码街道). So basically what can i tell you, Shima is part of Longhai City (merger from Longxi and Haicheng)
Do you have any idea the name or maybe another relatives's name that still live in China?
If you want to do the journey, better we find people to go together, i would like to go as well, but i cannot speak the dialects, only a little bit mandarin
