Hi, I hope someone may be able to help me in my quest to trace my ancestral 'Chin Village'. My Grandfather (Edwin Chin) emigrated to Jamaica approx 1915 and returned to China for a bride early 1930s (Maria Fung). My Dad was sent to China approx 1947(ish) for two years but does not remember the names of the Fung or Chin villages, or their locations - but I did find out from my Aunt that the Fung Village was named something like Nu Foo. Thanks to the Chinese Benevolent Association (rhew) in this thread: siyigenealogy.proboards.com/thread/1904/hakka-villages-shenzhen-dongguan-longgang I've found a Niu Fu village, and my Dad thinks the 'Chin Village' is Fenghuangwei (but he can't be sure) - both of these villages are pinpointed on this map: mapalist.com/Public/pm.aspx?mapid=443633 My question is, how do I find out whether there are loads of Chins in Fenhuangwei, to prove it is the correct village? Similarly, how do I find out whether the Niu Fu village contains loads of Fungs? I'm afraid none of us can speak or read any Mandarin, Cantonese or Hakka. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. We are planning to return to our ancestral villages next year so I'm hoping to pinpoint the exact villages before travelling. Best regards and many thanks in advance. Vince Chin

Vince, As I reread my answer, I noticed a bit of redundancy.. I had meant to suggest you message rhew directly. If you cannot reach him via the forum private messaging system, contact me and I will try to forward a message. I have posted my email address when you click on my name above my avatar. I was also trying to have you access his web gallery in this particular post: Link to rhew's special project with the CBAclick . There is also an attached spreadsheet. Lastly, try to show us the Chinese characters for the villages. Have your elder write the character and attach it to the post as an image. Sorry for not answering the question directly.

Hello, I'm on a search as well. I recently found that my family is from a village called "new-foo". My great grandparents were from there and my grandfather returned there to die. They are Chins and I was also told the language was Hakka. I don't believe I will be able to find my great grandparents' families, but I would love to know more about the village.
Help!

Hi, I've finally tracked down the Chin Ancestral village and it's not Fenghuangwei, it's actually Niu Hu (Ngao Foo/Ngiu Foo in Hakka), the same as Jennchin's. Thanks to Robert Hew in the Chinese Benevolent Society in Jamaica I was able to piece together all the different items. I also now know that Pái shā wéi is my Grandmother's Fong Ancestral village, see here for them mapped: mapalist.com/Public/pm.aspx?mapid=443633I'm going to China in April 2015 with my Wife with hopefully all three adult kids (it's difficult getting a 21 year old interested), and I will take many photos - can't wait. Thanks all for you help and for reading my quest. Vince Chin

Also don't forget to give us details on your upcoming visit and for the newbies, please explain in detail how you determined your ancestral village's name.

Unfortunately the burial records did not mention the village for either parent, so that didn't help. However an analysis/search of the database showed that one of the clan names in question came overwhelmingly from one village. Then Vince remembered some old note/correspondence that mentioned that village, and he used that as confirmation that it was indeed the right one. For the other surname, there were 3 or 4 ancestral villages represented in the cemetery, but again, once he was reminded of the different names, one did ring a bell. And I understand that looking at the 2 on a map, the old family stories about the geographical features etc separating them all fell into place. Hopefully on his trip he will find a zupu/jiapu that will actually have his family's information at least partially recorded!
