My late grand father' name was 徐 添 , translated in Malaysia where I was born as Chooi Theam. In hanyu pinyin it is Xu Tian and in Cantonese iyutping is ceoi tim At the age of 12 in around 1903 he left China with his mother and migrated to Malaysia and settled in Penang. There my great grand mother became a domestic help (servant in some Chinese family) and my grand father was apprenticed to a shop. He was from San wui Ho tong, i.e. the village of Hetang 荷 塘 of the Xinhui district (I am using the hanyu pinyin pronunciation of both) and so we have always regarded that as our ancestral village. In Cantonese jyutping, hetang is ho tong.
1. Is there any reader with surname (last name) Xu (ceoi) or any other surname whose ancestor came from Hetang?
2. I am interested to find out the economic and social conditions of Hetang during period around 1903.
3. I am interested to know about the present day economic and social conditions of Hetang as observed by people who have recently been there.
4. I shall contact Overseas Affairs of Guangdong organization to find out about relatives such as the father of my grand father, brothers or cousins, if any. It shall be interesting if I can get hold of a copy of the zu pu of the Xu generation who found themselves in Hetang or Xinhui.

Your Hetangzhen (荷 塘鎮) is an island located NE of Jiangmen city (江門市) and there is s small country town by the same name. There are many other villages on this island, so you still need to know your gf's village name. Hetang is above another island which is part of Jiangmenshi called Chaolianzhen (潮蓮鎮).

Yes, I have seen the satellite image of Hetang island and it seems that it is fairly large to be classified as one village; in other words, as you have indicated, there are many villages on this island. However we have always been told that we were from San wui ho tong and not given the the name of the specific village on this island.
Where is the "small country town by the same name" located in relation to Hetang island?

Hi Henry and twoupman, thanks for your inputs.
Henry, looking at the map, I presume you are referring to the dot on the island; i.e., Hetang country town is on Hetang island. Am I correct?

There are indeed many villages on the island of Hetang. I counted more than twenty.

Is it true that the various villages on Hetang Island would have been populated by people with the same surname as my grand father i.e. Xu (徐) during his time in China?

True, I believe this is common in the Si Yi region - the Village Database is organized by family/village: www.c-c-c.org/villagedb/search.cgiOnly Taishan (Toishan) and Kaiping (Hoiping) counties have been entered into the database, the Xinhui (Sunwui) county, that contains Hetang Island, information will probably follow.

Cchee, have you found your village by now?
I am planning to bring my dad to visit his ancestral village this year. He said that his dad came from Ho Tong (hetang in Mandarin) and mentioned something about Sanmui/Wongwan...
Our family name is Lee and my grandma (Liew) apparently came from the same region too.
I would like to start looking into transportation (e.g. how far from Jiangmen), if I would need to book a hotel in Ho Tong or if we could stay in Jiangmen and just travel there in the day...
Any info about the village would be appreciated.
Finally, now my mum wants to visit her region (Dongshan in Fujian) in the same trip, so any info on how to get there from Jiangmen would be a great help too.
Thank you in advance.

petales, As I indicated previously at the beginning of this thread, HoTong/Hetang (荷塘)(Lotus Pond) is an island and your village of San Mui/Wong Wan is Huangwancun (篁湾村) is located to the SE of the town of Hetangzhen (荷塘镇). You have a choice of staying in Jiangmen City (江门市) and take a taxi to Huangwancun (篁湾村) or perhaps stay in Hetangzhen (荷塘镇). Jiangmen City (江门市) can be reached very easily from Guangzhou City (广州市). To locate the village just goto Google Maps and enter in English Guangdong, Jiangmen, Hetang and you will see the village just SE of the town. As for Dongshan in Fujian (福建东山) it is quite far from Jiangmen City (江门市) and is located near the NE border between Guangdong (广东) and Fujian (福建) not too far from Swatow/Shantou (汕头). However, be careful as Dongshanxian (东山县) is an island whereas Dongshangang (东山港) is the port and is on the mainland. You can go by long distance bus from Guangzhou to Shantou and further on by local bus into Dongshan. houseofchinn.com

I just came back from a trip to Hotong/Wong Wan with my family. We visited our old home where the star fruit tree planted by my ancestors is now 180 years old.
The village is now very accessible by car from Jiangmen city (we stayed at the 5-star Yucca Hotel) as they have built new roads, bridges etc all the way there.
There are however many migrants from elsewhere living in the villages nowadays and as such they are no longer deemed safe. We prayed to our ancestors and ate lunch there and then returned to Jiangmen. Didn't visit our clan though as we were given the impression (from my cousins) that it wouldn't be easy and that the clan elders may expect financial contributions from us that we may not be ready to offer.
