Hi,
I am trying to confirm if there was a village named Fung Gong Hee in Dongguan. A distant cousin said that is the village that my grandfather came from. I cannot find this on any map so I am assuming the name changed or it was destroyed or absorbed into other villages. I tried looking in at the map that is found in the book Jamican Chinese WorldWide. The book has a city or town called Fung Gong. Would anyone know if Fung Gong and Fund Gong Hee are one and the same?Thank you.

What are the Chinese characters? RHewclick has researched on this, maybe he can help you. 凤岗 Fung Gong (Feng Gang in pinyin) Hee is ?? Maybe it is 凤岗圩 (Feng Gang Wei), located at 22.746541,114.148593

For the n00bies, click on the link lachinatownclick provided for rhewclick and go through his Robert's recent posts and threads. You should find his public email address and links to the extensive work he has done for the Hakka and the Jamaican Chinese. It would be nice if the moderators would display their email addresses in their profiles. The years I have been a moderator, it is a rare spam message which breaks through my spam filter and shows in my inbox. The modern spam filters are very good and there should be little fear that the Norks will infiltrate my workstation . If the people are overly worried, then post their email address without using special characters. For example, use at instead of @ and dot com instead of " .com" This would make it easier for n00bs to connect with people for help. IMHO

Bahamaine, Fung Gong (凤岗) is not the name of a village while “Hee” is the Hakka pronunciation for Xu/Wei (Mandarin) or Heui (Cantonese) for “country marketplace or fair”, 圩. Today it is located inside Fenggangzhen (凤岗镇) or town (镇) for Zhen (Mandarin) or Jan (Cantonese) at GPS: 22.747041, 114.149301. The closest train station on the Kowloon-Guangzhou railway (广九线) is Longgangqu (龙岗区), GPS: 22.699342, 114.120097 which is in Shenzhen Prefecture. twoupman houseofchinn.com

There is a difference between 风 (wind; put out to dry or air; winnow; style; practice; custom; scene; view; news; information;) and 凤 (phoenix).

I believe that the village you are talking about is 凤岗圩 Feng Gang Wei (in Mandarin, or Fung Gong Hee in Hakka), Dongguan Shi, Guangdong Sheng at 22.746634, 114.148686. That is a little east of Feng Gang Zhen (see attached map below, VERY close to the co-ordinates that twoupman gave). I have not yet added it to the villages in mapalist.com/Public/pm.aspx?mapid=414030, but will do that in the next revision.

Sorry, I have lost track of the places that I had placed this message. Thanks to everyone who responded. I will check out if Feng Gang Wei is the correct village. Thanks again.
