INS Chinese Exclusion Files: Another Perspective
This presentation will focus on research issues surrounding Chinese Exclusion Act case files created by the former Immigration and Naturalization Service and now available to researchers at numerous National Archives facilities across the country. Using examples taken from the USCIS Master Index, attendees will learn that most early 20th century Chinese immigrants have more than one file in more than one record series or location. INS’ inventory and indexing of all these files will also be discussed. This “behind the scenes” perspective is meant to provide researchers--and the Archivists who help them—with an enhanced understanding of the Chinese Exclusion files. The presentation is not recorded.
