Hi everyone, I was hoping to find my family's tuteng. I've spent some time looking for it on several Chinese search engines, but my Chinese isn't quite up to scratch, so I haven't had much luck refining the results. Any information at all would be appreciated As far as I know, we are from Guangdong, if it helps.

Hi Vnmph,
As Wu (伍) is not within the 100 most populous surnames, I am not able to assist in providing you with its tuteng as I had done for others in the past. However if you wish to see the distribution of your surname within China, I may be able to provide you with that.

Hi Vnmph, The distribution of your surname Wu (伍) in China is given below. If you do already have it, I have two and a half pages of write-up In Chinese regarding your surname. If you want that as well, I can post it as well.

Hi, I hope it's okay to post here after so long! Just wanted to say thank you for the info. Very interesting to see the distribution of the surname, seems it's a very southern one. This year I had the opportunity to ask my grandmother a bit about our roots. We're from Poon-yue/番禺 district (very close to Zengcheng, actually!). My great-great-grandfather migrated to Canada around the same time as the other Cantonese migration waves to NZ/Australia. However in his case, he returned after saving up some money. My family would eventually settle in Hong Kong during WWII, and then immigrate to Canada once more, much later.
ps Philip if you still have that write-up, I would be interested in seeing what's in it

Hi Henry, Looks like Tuteng taken from different sources differs. See the images for the Tuteng for Tan/Tham/Tam/Tom (譚). The top image is from those surname booklets you bought from China for me. I believe the image below is from the same source you took for the surname Ng/Wu (伍). Hi Vnmph, If you send a personal message through this Forum giving me your email, I shall send you the two and a half pages of write-up in Chinese. Philip

Hi Philip, Yes, the sources differ. I believe the difference is in the historical date of the tuteng. The top tuteng seems to be a later more developed surname totem, while the bottom image is definitely a Jinwen image: My two sources of the Jinwen image are inverted & reverse mirror images of the bottom tuteng - as the top is on the bottom & right side of the tuteng above appears on the left side of my two Jinwen symbols. My 2 Jinwen images are from different sources. Henry

Hello, I was looking up on the surname 伍. If you still have information on this last name, please help me out. I couldn't find much on it, other than this website: www.asiawind.com/bb/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1796But this doesn't give me much. I was looking for when the last name originated, and how it differs from吳. If you can provide me with anything, that'll be great.

Hi Cousin: I refer you to this website (back up again after a short absence) created by forum member Ron Eng Young and on which I collaborated: sites.rootsweb.com/~chinesesurname/sueysun.html#originNote that this website deals specifically with the Ng/Wu clan of Taishan, Guangdong, where the clan is particularly strong. The Asiawind website you mentioned is talking about a different tradition, even though all Ng/Wu clan members throughout the world claim to be related. If you have questions about the Ng/Wu clan, I and other forum members belonging to the clan would be happy to assist you. Greg
