I'm looking to get a list of chinese genealogists or research companies to research my chinese past. Can anyone suggest where I could find these people?

thomasirl, It depends what you want to research. If you want to trace your roots within China, then I recommend My China Roots. If you want to trace the pathway of your ancestors in the host country, then I have some recommendations of professionals for the USA. There are certain basics you will need: the surname of your ancestors and their ancestral village in Chinese characters. The names they used in their host country, including all their paper names and pseudonyms. The date and port of entry to their host country. This information comes from the best source, your ancestors and their kin via your interviews and archaeological research of family heirlooms. With these basic information the professionals might better trace their movements.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply. I would be interested in both options.
In relation to researching inside China, do you have any other recommendations apart from My China Roots. Is there a genealogy association or similar companies?
Thanks Doug

This site is the best place for pro bono advice for the Chinese genealogist. If you are in the area, consider attending Lawrence Jeung’s & Henry Tom’s genealogy course in San Francisco co-sponsored by the Chinese Historical Society of America (CHSA) August 11 & 12, 2015 from 9 AM - 5 PM. Henry’s nephew will do commissioned field work in Guangdong.

Hi Mchow, Welcome to the SiYi Forum, Many of us will try to assist you in your Chinese genealogy quest. Initially, you will need the Chinese characters for the names of your ancestors and your ancestral village. Some of our Chinese literate members can help. Once your ancestral village is identified and located. Then you may want to secure a copy of the village genealogy book that that contains the names of your ancestors. If you reside in the USA, you may want to attend the next Chinese Genealogy Workshop January 11-12, 2016 in Las Vegas, Nevada: siyigenealogy.proboards.com/thread/2192/chinese-genealogy-workshop?page=4Henry

Dear Mr. Henry
Thank you for quick reply. My grandfather's name is written on the right hand side of the picture where it says Chow, his name was Chow Yew Kai from Nam Hoi (Nanhai) Sha Tou in Guangzhou. He left China in 1929 when he went to Panama.
I live in Panama.

Hi, Mchow,
Looking at your grandfather's picture closely, it seems like he was the director or president of the Hong Kong branch of the Nam Hoi Sa Tau Association(text on the left side).
香港 南海 沙頭 同鄉會
Heung Gwong Nam Hoi Sa Tau Tung Heung Wui
Hong Kong Nam Hoi Sau Tau Association
If you Google: 香港南海沙頭同鄉會, you will get some news clips and some Facebook links. All the text is in Chinese, however, with the 'translate' feature on the Google listings, you can use it to understand the gist of the site/posting.
His name was a little out of focus and all I could make out was: 周糴隹 (jau dek jeui) which does not coincide with your pronunciation.Maybe the characters that I looked up are not correct.
I used to live in Honduras. My grandfather came from Toisan to Honduras in the 1930's.
Thanks to Henry's invaluable resources we are able to trace are roots to our village and beyond.
Good luck in your search!

The top two characters on the left column reads: 港僑 Gangqiao/Kong Kiuh to mean Hong Kong overseas Chinese resident, in this instance it means the individual in question, ie. the photo of the person shown. It is not 香港 Hong Kong even though there is a 香港南海沙頭同鄉會 association. twoupman houseofchinn.com
