Hi my name is Edi. I need a very big help from anybody here. I don't speak Mandarin Chinese. I know a little bit of Chinese characters. My great-great grandfather came to Indonesia in about 1840-1860 (my rough estimate). According to my dad, he came from a village named Hian Hoa in Fujian province. Somebody suggested to my dad that the village name might be Hin Hoa, but he didn't buy it because people from Hin Hoa usually work in certain occupation but my great-great grandfather was more or less a farmer. I know it is hard, but hopefully somebody's ancestors came from the same village and can help me. My great-great grandfather's name was Tan Liang Tiong (or maybe Tong). I don't know what the character for Liang in this case, which I believe is different than my name (Liang, like in Zhuge Liang). Thank you very much. I am stuck in my effort to find my ancestors to him. Please ask me any questions that I might answer to help me find the location of my ancestors.

Do you have photo of your great great grandfather's tomb or even descendants of him? I also think the name you list is derived from the Hokkien/Minnan Dialect? Often the tomb will have in Chinese characters the name of the village he came from. Keep in mind, the village names may have changed over time. For example, my ancestry tablet and family tree (which lists all of my paternal ancestors for 8 generations in Taiwan) said my great, great, great, great, great grandfather came from Lin Nei, Qiaozaitou Bao (a division meaning the equivalent of village during the Qing Dynasty), Longxi County, Zhangzhou, Fujian. But, through some research, I was able to discover that presently it is now located in Qiaozaitou Village, Chaoyang Town, Longwen District, Zhangzhou City, Fujian. Longxi County does not exist, what was Longxi County during the Qing Dynasty has been broken down to several places including Longwen District, Longhai City, etc.
I think most people on this site have more knowledge of villages in Guangdong Province or have ancestry from Guangdong Province and fewer people on here have knowledge or ancestry from Fujian Province.

Thank you for your reply. That was the mistake of my extended family. Some 40 years ago the government decided to use the Chinese cemetery for a university, and there was my great grandfather's tomb with a lot of information including my dad's name on it. And nobody knew where that tomb stone was located after they removed the tomb of my great grandfather, grand father and grand mother, etc. I will check again with my family if they can contact whoever that might have the tombstone. I believe most Chinese in the US came from Guangdong area, is that correct?

Hi Edi,
The way as I understand it Xing Hua/Hin Hoa/Heng Hwa (興化/兴化) is one of the dialects in the more northern region of Fujian. I understand it is also spoken in the city of Putian. In the early days the main trades of immigrants in Malaysia from that region northern are related to bicycles, motor related and spare parts. Some of my friends belong to that dialect. As such the area in Fujian covers quite a large area. To locate your ancestral place, you need to know the particular place in that region your ancestor was from.
I hope you can find your Chen/Tan (陳/陈) ancestry. I will be interested to see how far back your ancestors and mine share the common ancestor.
Philip Tan
