Can anyone help me find my father's ancesteral village? His family name is Chu (as in pearl). We believe my grandfather left China as a young teenager around 1920 and ended up in Peru where he set up a business exporting coffee and importing household goods. His Christian name was Jose Chu Yen and he was known as "el Chino" (the Chinaman) in the Peruvian jungle town he lived in. His mother (my great grandmother) was Samoi Yen (in Hakka) Yeung Sam Mui in Cantonese. Sa-moi = third daughter. My grandfather's name was Chu Dai Ching (Cantonese) I don't speakk Hakka so I don't know how to spell in Hakka.
On an old document (some kind of a passport) he lists his ancestral village as Chekai (Chixi in Mandarin ?) which my father thinks is near Toisan. We travelled there to try to find it but were not successful. We did however find a Chu family ancestoral association but they could only communicate in Chinese so I am not able to communicate with them in writing.
Can anyone help me try to trace the village and hopefully then the name of my great grandfather who died before my grandfather went to Peru. My great grandmother went to Hong Kong in about 1930 and was there until the war but was illiterate and we think she died there during the Japanese occupation. Again, no documentation unfortunately.
When we visited the villages in Toisan many told us they used to have records of everyone in the village but that often they were buried or otherwise hidden for fear that they would fall into the hands of the authorities, and some were even burned. If we could find the correct village we would at least know if the records exist !
Thanks in advance for any help
