I am house-bound on my current trip in China because of the incessant rain. No one wants to go out with me in the wet. The seventeen-strong party I am meeting on a roots discovery journey will not arrive until Sunday, 11 October.
There is an upside to it. I was able to see the news of China's first home-grown scientist winning the most prestigious prize, the Nobel Prize in Medicine on TV. This is great inspirational stuff. " Artemisinin is China's gift to the world.......,' My translation of Tu Youyou' comment on her award.
The winner Tu Youyou boasts of many firsts or as the Chinese media would put it, "the nos." The nos meaning she does not hold a doctorate or higher degree; she speaks no English or travelled outside of China; she belongs to no scientific bodies or academy, and published no papers which come under Science Citation Index. She leads her team of researchers year in year out on her quest for a cure for malaria. She has faith in TCM and is duly rewarded and recognised. What a ground-breaking success story.
Please add what you are reading on your local media. I can't get enough.
