Hi, my husband's great grandfather was John KING and very little is known about him by our family. I am trying to trace him prior to arriving in Sydney, NSW, Australia in July 1854 and after the death of his Australian wife in 1892. The information I have been able to trace to date is as follows:
I've found two ships that arrived in Sydney from China in July 1854 (declared by John KING in his Application to the Colonial Secretary in 1877 as the month and year of his arrival):
'Aristides' Departed Hong Kong April 13, Arrived Sydney July 14 1854 carrying a cargo of tea and 6 Chinese passengers travelling steerage
'Formosa' Departed Shanghai April 28 1854, Departed Hong Kong May 6 1854, Arrived Sydney July 15 1854 carrying a cargo of tea and 20-24 Chinese passengers
July 12, 1877 - Affidavit to the Colonial Secretary of NSW - I John KING of Gunnedah... storekeeper... aged 47 years... born in Amoy, Empire of China, Asia... arrived in the Colony of NSW on or about July 1854... that I have resided in the said Colony for 23 years... that I now reside in Gunnedah and if naturalized I intend to remain in the Colony having purchased Freehold Estate in the said Colony and carrying on business in Gunnedah.
August 6, 1877 - Oath of Alliegiance (orally given) in Gunnedah, NSW.
August 11, 1877 - Naturalization Certificate - John KING native of China, aged 47 years, storekeeper arrived in the Colony of NSW in 1854 (ship unknown) and has resided in said Colony for 23 years. (note: this Naturalization Certificate of John KING has been posted on this site before but attached to the wrong John KING from Amoy, China)
May 18, 1878 - Marriage Certificate - John KING, bachelor, 47 years, born in China, Boarding House Keeper, son of John KING (sailor) and Jane Wally/Waltz married Sarah Jane HOLLAND, spinster, 16 years, daughter of James Holland (gardener) and Ellen Lynch - married in the Wesleyan Church in Gunnedah, NSW, Australia - signatures are in English
John and Sarah had three children: Beatrice May KING 1879-1880; Grace Maud KING 1880-1911 and May Sarah KING 1887-1972 (my husband's grandmother)
John's wife Sarah, died in 1892 (aged 31 years) and I have been unable to find a record of John KING's death in Australia.
Any help would be appreciated. I have two photos found in the family home that could be John KING's parents John KING Snr and Jane WALLY/WALTZ. I will post these as well. Any leads or help would be appreciated. Thanks, Glenys
