Hi everyone, Would deeply appreciate any leads here as to where this location in Xinhui might be. My late grandfather left me a handwritten address of my ancestral village in Xinhui, Guangdong, attached as below. I am terribly poor in reading Chinese characters let alone traditional Chinese so any help would be great! Its hard to trace back because my grandfather was the only son in his family. He left Guangdong when he was young to come to Malaysia and my family has settled here ever since. Thank you for all your help!

What have you learned so far? 滘頭 Kau Tau is listed in the village database, but not the village. Looks like the area is just east of Jiangmen. The family names are 趙,林 / Chiu, Lum.

viclam,
Google Maps gives Jiaotouxiang (滘頭鄉) location at GPS: 22.573475, 113.103194 but unfortunately there is no label for Tainingli (泰寧里) village. However, there is a Lincun village (林村) to the NE which means it is probably a Lin/Lam surname area.

Hi Twoupman and lachinatown, Thanks for your help. I really hope I am looking in the right area. My surname is Lam and the fact that it could be Lam surname area is good news to me. I checked the coordinates you stated. Could Tainingli (泰寧里) as written by my grandfather and 太宁里 (also spelled Tainingli) in the map be the same but just a case of it being written wrongly? I know the first character is not the same, but the last two are. I have uploaded an image as below highlighting 太宁里 on the map.

Jiaotouxiang 滘頭 is really little southwest of the coordinates and the 太宁里 Tainingli spot you posted. It could be possible that the village has changed name or that it is too small that maps do not show it. There is no question about the location of Jiaotouxiang 滘頭. There is a hint that Tainingli (泰寧里) is located there.

Thank you very much lachinatown. Other than the address and the names of my late grandfather and late great grandfather, how else can I ascertain that this would be my ancestral village and to look for distant relatives? Should I make a visit, perhaps call up the municipal council in Jiangmen? I am quite new at genealogy, so some advise would be much appreciated

All the Chinese maps I looked, I don't see the 太宁里 Tainingli village. The only place is google map. Maybe those with experience can help you how to get started on making contacts or do research.

viclam, I did a Chinese search using 太宁里 (this is in Simplified characters where 宁 = 寧) and it returned 泰寧里 which means it is the same place and its proper name is 泰寧里. This village is coupled with Xijiacun (西甲忖). See www.youbianku.com/广东省江门市新会区会城镇西甲村泰宁里. twoupman houseofchinn.com

Good job. This appears to be the correct location. It is different that the 太宁里 Tainingli village shown on the Google map viclam found. so the question is: does Jiaotouxiang 滘頭 district cover both areas?
New set of questions.

Hi everyone, I've put both places on Google Map to compare. The new location that was found by twoupman is the circled red one with the "X" cross. Do you think this is the correct location? Are there other alternatives to verifying it?

viclam, The first location I gave you for Jiaotou (滘頭)at GPS: 22.573475, 113.103194 identifies it being located in the Wuyi Administrative City of Jiangmen (江門市) where you found Tainingli (太宁里) nearby. The second location I found through a China website identifies a location with Xijiacun (西甲村) at GPS: 22.517306, 113.060614 is linked to your village of Tainingli (泰寧里)located in Xinhui (新會區). I believe the Xinhui site is most likely the location of your ancestral village. If someone is going to visit the place he might as check out the Jiangmen location to verify it is not your ancestral village. twoupman houseofchinn.com

Thank you very much Twoupman!
Much appreciated. I hope to make a visit soon.
When I am there at that place, what steps do I take to confirm that is the village or to retrace my ancestry? Is there a temple which already holds records of all my family member's names?
Happy New Year too!

viclam, Be sure to bring along all written (in Chinese) information (including the image you posted above) you have plus photos so somebody may be able to identify/recognize your grandfather. Make sure you have dates as well so they would be reference points in your search. If this turns out to be your grandfather's village then I believe you need not bother with the other village in Jiangmen. twoupman houseofchinn.com
