Sorry for the late reply! I finally found time to take a photo of the entire gravestone to show that it is xinhui. The characters were provided by my mother so it should be right. Is there such a village in xinhui? We are leaving next week for China and would really like to find this village if possible.

That is all the info that I have. Sorry! I guess we will just try and see if the village is in Xinhui based on the information provided by everyone.

bobbylo, Perhaps I should elaborate on how I located your village of Longpanli/Long Poon Lay (龍蟠里) at GPS @22.448697, 112.991173. I actually started out by using your characters of (龍盤里) but Google Maps returned the result as 龍蟠里 which means their database only had 龍蟠里. I then proceeded to Village DB ( link) and did a search using surname Lau (劉) and the resulting Line 219 identified 龍蟠里 by the same village name, and it is the only such village name in Sun Wui (新會) county __ hence my posting of May 4, 2016 which also said “…盤 may have been an inadvertent error…”. After seeing your latest image I believe this to be the case. You should visit this Longpanli/Long Poon Lay (龍蟠里) and make your inquiries there as the Village Database clearly identifies it as a Lau (劉) village. Do not forget to bring along all the pertinent information you have in order for the village folks to verify your ancestor. Hope somebody in your group speaks Cantonese in order to communicate with the village folks. Do you need travel advice on how to get there? twoupman houseofchinn.com

thanks for your detailed explanation. It would be great if you can give us details on how to get there. Then we can let our driver know. Still trying to find some relatives to see if we can get the chinese characters for my grandfather and great grandfather's name. If not, we will just walk around the village. Once again, thank for your help.

bobbylo, Assume you will be entering Guangdong Province from Hong Kong. To avoid going via Guangzhou City (a terrible hassle) it is best to travel directly to Jiangmen City by ferry from the China Ferry Terminal (中國客運碼頭 33 Canton Road) on Kowloon side. Ferry departs 8.30am. Ferry arrives at Jiangmen Port 2.5 hours later where you disembark and clear customs. There is a shuttle bus (free but do not dally because it will leave asap) which takes you into Xinhui Town and drops you at Zhongxinlu (中心路) bus terminal beside the New Gold Mine Hotel (新金田酒店 15 Zhongxinlu) which is 3 star hotel where you can stay at a reasonable price. Make enquiries at the reception desk about your ancestral village of Longpanli (龍蟠里) as the people working there come from the surrounding villages and they will probably know about your village. It is best to book a taxi and save yourselves the hassle. You need to cross the river twice and head south for a short distance of about 6 miles (10km). You can also make the appropriate arrangement for the taxi to wait for you and make the return trip back to town _ you need to pay for the wait time or you can take a local bus back to town. To return back to Hong Kong, book your ferry ticket at the office beside the hotel and the shuttle bus will take you back to Jiangmen Port. Hope this helps. Have an enjoyable time seeking your roots! twoupman houseofchinn.com

Thanks so much! I have another question to ask about finding ancestral villages. My cousin provided me information about my maternal grandparent's village in Kaiping. However, she does not understand or write very much Chinese either. She provided me with some characters of the village but she is not sure if it is the right characters. I have uploaded the photo of the characters. Can you let me know if there is such a village and the surname is Chong. Thanks!

It is located closer to 白沙 Baisha in Kaiping than to 赤水 Baisha. The village Dragon Mt. is too small to show on map. But the higher level village 瓦片坑 Wapiankeng is located at 22.225061, 112.557299. [Update: Dragon Mountain is just southeast of this point, shown on a Chinese map]

Hello twoupman and douglaslam
This is a very interesting thread as I will be going to Haiyan south west of Xin Hui. I stayed at the apartment of a Hong Kong friend who keeps the apartment as a holiday place on my last visit there. He will not be there this time so intend to travel to Haiyan either from the Skypier ferry to Zhuhai from Hong Kong airport without going through the immigration and customs in Hong Kong, spend a night in Zhuhai (it is a nice place) then go to Haiyan by taking a bus to Taisan (Taicheng) then catch a taxi to a Haiyan hotel for a few days roaming that area. You raise the possibility of going to JiangMen to go to Xin Hui, any suggestions of getting to Jiang Men by bus or ferry and then going to Haiyan? I could spend a night en-route?
I can fly into Hong Kong or Shenzen or Macau, Guangzhou airport is another possibility which I do not mind having been there before. I see you both are experienced visitors to the places and hope to hear your advice, I speak Cantonese enough to get by but hope to go with my Malaysian Chinese wife who speaks the usual main dialects ( except Hoisanwah)and reads Mandarin, we have trekked with backpacks doing the Camino de Compostela in Spain so doing without a 5 star hotel is not a hassle as long as it is clean. September 2016 is the planned date.

chansomvia, The ferry (from Kowloon, Hong Kong) terminal in Jiangmen is called Jiangmengang (江门港) GPS: 22.580471, 113.176448. You should be able to get a bus into Jiangmen City or a taxi to the Palace International Hotel (丽宫国际酒店) GPS: 22.598956, 133.089121, a 5 star hotel, really plush. There is a long distance bus terminal inside the hotel where I am sure you should be able to find a bus heading towards Haiyan (海宴) in Taishan (台山). If you wish to get into Huicheng (会城) a taxi ride is about 40 minutes. twoupman houseofchinn.com
