Hi: I'm glad someone mentioned the passing of Tyrus Wong (黃齊耀). He happened to be my granduncle, the husband of my paternal grandfather's youngest sister. He is a most appropriate subject for this forum as he was a native of Taishan County, specifically 台山縣北坑堡南安里. Any Wong clan relations out there? Although his ability to speak Chinese was limited (he came to this country when he was just a child and then mixed with many American-born Chinese), the Chinese he remembered was usually in the Taishan dialect. For example, when he spoke of his and his fellow villagers' attraction to "Gold Mountain" (California), he would refer to it as "Gim Sun"--which in standard Cantonese would be "Gum Sahn."

I knew him and his daughter. I am lachinatown. He painted the dragon mural by the east gate of New Chinatown. Outstanding work during his career. Beautiful design and built kites. Love his exhibit.

Today’s Google Doodle honors the life and legacy of Tyrus Wong (born Wong Gen Yeo) the Chinese-American artist responsible for some of the best-known images in American popular culture. Drawing inspiration from Chinese artists of the Song Dynasty, Wong applied his unique vision to paintings, prints, and even the Walt Disney film Bambi. Tyrus Wong's 108th BirthdayClick or watch below

In my latest genealogy hunt in Toishan and Hoiping, I might have passed Tyrus Wong's home village on Wednesday and Thursday without knowing it. Just a piece of trivia on the sad passing a remarkable American and Chinese.

Hi douglaslam, I was reading your article on Tyrus Wong's home village (10/26/2018) and just so happen, I'm helping Tyrus Wong's daughter in location Tyrus Wong's home village. Many years ago, she and her father visited the village and now has forgotten exactly where's its location. With the village's name, 台山縣北坑堡南安里, we arrived at 2 possible locations, at 21.967923, 112.809720 and 22.348925, 112.732549. Can you offer some insight to Tyrus's home village? Thank you very much, dragon008

dragon008, I've been to or passing through so many places in my home county as well as Toishan and Hoiping that I am losing track of things. I am not a well organised person like Henry. I commit things to memory and I tend to forget after a while. But, I can call on my Toishan contacts if need be.
Watch this space.

dragon008, I have an answer by a Hoiping native from Hong Kong. He has been to an outlying island 40 mins. away by ferry from Toishan mainland. It is called 上川島 there is a 北坑 南村.

The two coordinates posted by dragon008 do not look like the correct one. Also the village at "上川島 there is a 北坑 南村" maybe wrong one too.

Thank you to both douglaslam and lachinatown for your efforts. Since, I don't have any clues, I'll patiently wait for further comments.
