My grandmother's name is Lim Goek Suan. According to record, she was originally from Penang. She married my grandfather Tan Seng Sam (aka Tan Ah Sam). They lived in Taiping. I am trying locate Lim Goek Suan's genealogy. I currently live in the United States and would like to trace our genealogy back to China. Does anyone have any information of the Lim clan from which my grandmother originates?

I have to assume you have more information than what you shared. If you are a noob, all family historians recommend beginners start with what they know best: interviewing your own family. You need Chinese characters, obtained from documents or tombstones, or written by your elders. Phonetic English never works. China is a patriarchal society, so you would be looking for your great grandfather's heritage (maternal or paternal?). Since the wife becomes part of the husband's family, records and contacts can be sparse depending on many sociological nuances of your ancestral villages.
The forum members might be able to help if you can present more data. The chance of finding distant LIM relatives on this forum is remote since China is a huge country with a massive population base and few (~100+) surnames.
