For almost all of us who live outside of China, I think I can safely say, nowadays there are acquaintances and relatives who are mixed race, Chinese plus some other(s). The Cantonese "japjung" Northern "hunxie" and Hawaiian (mostly Japanese) "happa" -- all seem to feel socially negative and insulting. The underlying word parts are plain enough so maybe the prejudice is just a byproduct of Asian mentality?
Is there any Chinese term that is more neutral or respectful? This is becoming more of an issue with time as there is increasing intermarriage in the present generations, even in Mainland China.
My Japanese mixed friends prefer "Double" which is written out in katakana the Japanese alphabet for foreign words, but I wonder how widespread and accepted it is in Japan.
