Chakrajuices, when you have a little time, please watch these YouTube videos by Dan Seto (a Canadian Seto), when he visited his parent's and grandparent's Villages in China. I have watched them over and over and still don't tire of them. I searched to see if anyone had done any videos on Dajin, but didn't find any so far.

@faychee, While "the old reading practice is from right to left, while the modern reading is from left to right," for Chinese, there is only one way to read vertical writing. In the headstone, 佑荃 was written from top to bottom.
Therefore we don't know if someone wrote the name incorrectly or if there are two different people we are dealing with.

I agree Lachinatown, I am still not sure if we have the correct person's family tree, so I am hoping that Chakrajuices will send me the photos (front and back), to send to the Village Head. Hopefully he will show them around to see if anyone still remember's him or if there is still family remaining in Dajinli.
I guess the only real thing we know is that his Village is Dajinli, is that correct?

@faychee,
Yes, that's what the headstone says. It could all possible that the original name was written horizontally and the stone maker read it incorrectly.

Are there any other 佑荃 You Quan or 荃佑 Quan You names written correctly as the headstone found within the zupu? I thought Jason stopped at the first person. Finally, confirmation with the potential descendents of 佑荃 living in China would be useful. If they point out the grave site of their 佑荃 You Quan, then that's evidence against the presumed lineage.

Doug, Those are AMAZING! How wonderfully beautiful to be able visually see the generations of family's lovingly connected together - it just elates my heart I can't imagine the labour of loving hours, upon hours that goes and has gone into keeping one's Zu Pu alive and recorded it makes my feeble attempts look like childplay. But, due to ALL of you I have started - yay! Thanks everyone.

... Doug,Those are AMAZING!... Sophie, if you are referring to the colored charts, those are the product of Philip philiptancl . The right side of my brain is atrophic and I cannot do nice charts like that. But first, we need to confirm your lineage.

Hi Doug,
When I contacted Wing Tak Seto, I gave him the name of the Village, 'Dajinli in Chishui' and the name 'You Quan 佑荃 Seto' with the Chinese characters. I asked him if he could look in Volume 3 of the new Situ Zupu.
The next day he sent page 70 with the arrow pointed at Quan You...
This was his exact comment "From the name 佑荃, I only found Vol 3 page 70 with 荃佑. Please confirm these two names are same for further tracing."
I had not told him about the 2 pages that Jason Wu had found in the Old Red Situ Zupu, of which page 67 in the old zupu is his page 70 in the new zupu. So it appears that he did search all of Dajinli for that name.
Now I will send him the photos that Chakrajuices provided and hope he can get them to the Village Head for corroboration.
Fingers crossed..........Fay Chee

OK, it is done! Here is what Wing Tak said "I have just passed the above information to the Library chief then forward to Village head to find out."
Now.......it will be hard waiting for an answer.

Sophie,
Consider initializing a WeChat app/account on your mobile. If your relatives decide to ping you, WeChat works better than email. Look at the software section.
FayChee or I can help you practice. The Chinese in-app translation function is useful.

Not good news. Looking at the proposed family tree of Quan You from FayChee and the names of grandsons Ken Bong and Ken Wai from jasonwu , I don't see a match of of any of the names from the back of the photo Sophie provided. Interesting is that the two wives of Quan You are listed. One woman is surname 何 He and the other is surname 张 Zhang. Are these consistent with the surname of Sophie's grandmother?

Hi Doug,
Yes, it is not good news and I looked through the entire Volume 3 today, just paring Gen24-You Quan/Quan You with Gen 26-Jian Bang and Jian Wei, and did not find a match....not even with Gen 26 only (grandkids).
You Quan's daughter (Chakrajuices's mom) does not know any of the Chinese relatives names, and his second wife passed away.
You Quan used other names such as Ah Wai and Seto Dak.....his Immigration papers only say 'Ah Wai' in the name section, and his signature is only Ah Wai (not Seto). So I am thinking that I should search for Wai Seto or Wai You Seto, but I don't know the characters......
I decided to wait and see if the Village Head can recognize the pictures and/or writings on the back.......waiting is hard.
