Will check it out 👍
Thank you so much Helen, I am gaining insight into the life of my GF and also many other Chinese Immigrants into NZ.
How challenging would that have been not only to Chinese in NZ but all around the world - my heart sorrows for their hardship but is strengthen to know of their courage, tenacity and love to improve the lives of their families and loved ones!
Thank you!

Thank you Helen for the additional information on Chinese immigration. Waiting is hard, I still haven't heard anything from the Situ Library or Wing Tak. I have gone over the entire Volume 3, Situ Zupu, and still haven't come up with matches for the grandchildren (Jian, Generation 26) or You Quan (Gen 24). There is another possibility that I must continue checking out....on the back of one of the two 1920 Certificates of Immigration, there is Chinese writing that Jason Wu translated as much as possible. Can anyone take a guess to the rest of the Chinese character's with 'question marks'? It indicates that in 1920, although his name is written Ah Wai, his Chinese name was You De/Dak (same as my grandfather's name), and I did come across a Generation 24 You De/Dak with two children (looks like one died???), but there were no 'Jian' grandchildren in Gen 26.... On the front of the Certificate are 3 dates.....1st-date of arrival, then handwritten in the top right corner is 1931 and 1936, so I am thinking that he traveled back to China and may have had 2 more children for a total of 4.......... He also had a Passport dated 1949, so he must have been traveling somewhere. Any thoughts about this???

Hi Doug, My grandmothers name is Ani Kipa - as far as I know my GF and her were not married and she is full indigenous Maori from New Zealand and my GF was 28 years her senior, she had my mother when she was 17 years old when she had my mother and a year or so later both mother and second baby died in childbirth.
I have asked the two remaining relatives if they have any further information about my GF but neither my Uncle Henry and his sister in law Har know anything of my GF's family in China, unfortunately.
If I find anything further I will post it.
Thanks everyone for your help.

Hi FayChee,
I was in the Szeto Library on Thursday, Nov 15 and bought 4 volumes ( 1,3,4,5 )of the Szeto genealogy books, I think they said 2 or 3 more volumes should be coming in 2 months.
I will ask a friend to check in a couple months.

Hi Henry,
I would love to get a set of Situ Zupus for myself and a set for my brother (and more if possible for my other relatives). Did they say if they could mail copies to the USA or if there is a way to place an order? I hope they will get a Website soon. I tried contacting them on WeChat, but I had difficulty using the APP and they didn't understand what I was trying to say.
I know it must have been hard to get all 4 volumes back to the States, especially that large one. If you ever want to unload them, please let me know.
Will you be posting more pictures from your trip? I never tire of seeing anything China...........

Dear FayChee,
In a few months, I will ask a friend to check on the status of the Szeto genealogy books available and ask about prices and whether my friend is willing to mail them to the US.
I have set up a DropBox for photos & videos from the trip that members of the group want to share and them you can look through them.

Hi Doug, I'm sure Sophie will answer your question, but since I am here, Uncle Henry Szeto is from the same Village of Dajinli, but I am not sure if he is directly related to her GF.

Hi Doug, Yes, just as Fay said Uncle Henry said that his father and my GF were cousins but he's not sure how close. He doesn't have any further information other than what he's has already given me.
Thanks

Sophie,
When you hit a brick wall in Chinese genealogy, then you do parallel genealogy.
Gather the phonetic spelling of Uncle Henry's relatives. Then gather their true given names in Chinese characters. Get access to photos of Uncle Henry's ancestors gravestones. Look for Chinese characters of his heirlooms.
Eventually his family tree will link to your grandfather's lineage. If you spot Uncle Henry's lineage on the Seto Zupu, then you will be that much closer to your grandfather.
IMHO

Doug, that is great advice! If Chakrajuices can get Uncle Henry's Chinese name and with the Chinese Characters, and his other family members names (father, brothers, uncles, etc.) I can try to find it in the new Vol 3 Situ Zupu!

While searching on Ancestry.com, I came across a second person named Ah Wai Szeto, who died a year after You Quan (aka Ah Wai) Seto. The Chinese character's seem to be in Mandarin? I think I recognize the Szeto on this tombstone, but can anyone read the name? I didn't see any characters that looked like Dajin, but some were covered by flowers. This tombstone was at Pukekohe Public Cemetery Pukekohe, Auckland Council, Auckland, New Zealand I believe that You Quan 'Ah Wai' is buried at Mangere Lawn Cemetery, Manukau, Auckland, NZ
