Nom Toon is the spelling used on my grandfather's immigration papers, in 1914. His name was Ng Yook Fay.
Can anyone get me started in finding the modern day location?

davidleong,
香山 Heung-san District has been renamed 中山 Zhongshan, it is a municipality north of Macau.
Here is its location in Google Maps: link.
Best, Jason

Davidleong, Heung Shan was renamed to Zhong Shan in 1925 after Sun Yat Sen died. His other name was Sun Zhong San. So, your grandfather's immigration papers were written before the name change. If there is a tombsone for him, that can usually confirm the village name for you. But most likely Jason has it correct. -Jeremy

Tyuti,
That link to the Street View was fantastic!
Is it possible to see if there is a 'Street View' for my Village or close to my village of Chaoyang Li (maybe Chishue Zhen)?
Also, for Chakrajuices village of Dajinli or Wingjoe's village of Leung Fai Lay?
Thank you,
Fay Chee

Thanks Lachinatown, I hope one day they will get to the other Villages too........it would really be awesome to use the 'Street View' function like Google Maps did to see my Village in real life..........like being there.......or like using a Virtual Reality headset. If someone would take VR videos just walking around the villages and showing points of interest or just giving us a look of village life/homes/crops/burials/ceremonies and mundane things, I'll bet they could sell them, especially to people like me. I just had a thought.....I wonder if I could hire someone to go to my village and videotape a walk around it, maybe inside a house, the rice field with water buffalo, the cemetery, architecture of the buildings, maybe talk to some of my village relatives......I know what everyone is thinking now....I should just go myself and you are all right....
Time for bed........Goodnight all!

Fay Chee,
There are flight from the East Coast to China [ Newark / Hong Kong ] in less than 16 hours non stop. It is a red-eye and you could easily sleep through the first half the flight. Visiting China for a couple of weeks would be the trip of a life time - especially for you, having done some much Chinese genealogy research. Please do not wait until your age makes it difficult to travel.
Just look at Tyler Thompson - anything is possible:

Fay Chee, Henry is absolutely right! Do not wait to go back as time is of the essence. Especially if you are looking to gain more information on your village or relatives, you need to go back early so you can talk to as many of the village elders as you can while they are still around. You never know what elder you will encounter that will know of your ancestors and possibly have stories to share. I went this past summer with the Friends of Roots program and I am so glad I did. I am already looking to go back in 2020 maybe; the research is truly never ending, haha. There are many programs that make it a lot easier to accomplish this journey with all the help you need. Roots+ is in the Spring and Fall, and Henry's is in the Fall as well. After almost 1000 posts here, making the trip back will make everything come full circle. This is a video of our trip: In regards to the street view, it is surprising that there is a lot more coverage in Zhongsan vs Toisan and Hoiping. Does anyone know what the reason is for this? Is it because it is closer to Guangzhou and they haven't traveled down into these more southern areas yet in full force? Or that there is a larger area of urban development in Zhongsan vs Toisan and Hoiping? - Jeremy

lachinatown,
Me specifically, I went to 4 villages of mine.
莲江, 永康乡, 台山 (MGF)
联安, 白水乡, 台山 (MGM)
西井, 都斛, 都阳乡, 台山 (PGF)
集成里, 杜澄乡, 開平 (PGM)
In total, however, we visited over 20 throughout Toisan, Hoiping, Sunwui, Zhongsan, and Guangzhou.

@jeremychin Glad you were able to fine the correct villages, since some villages have the same name.
It would be good if some one can post the locations of the villages not shown on openstreet map. Members can add villages on that site.

Another reason you should go back now... This is the entrance to my MGF's village: These are their neighbors: Who knows how long before the village gets swallowed up by industry...

lachinatownThe village database was a huge help in identifying the specific villages. Heungs and marketplaces are way too important. But there needs to be a way to search by marketplace in the database. Sometimes that is all someone remembers about where they are from. I have never used open street map. Where does it get it's base source material? From Google Maps, or is it created from scratch by the users? I started something on my own google map account to chart all of the villages in White Water town and the surrounding areas. I was using the village database as my guide. I'm guessing the openstreet map is similar? - Jeremy
