Hi All,
Thought I'd repost as it is better suited here.
Just wanted to let everyone know that Gene Chin's Hoisan dictionary has been updated, so you can now search by the alphabet in regards to the romanization of characters! So if you have a name of a person or place, but don't know the Chinese character, this could help you narrow down the options and cross reference with the definitions to see what may make sense!
For example, if it was told to me that the first part of my ancestors name was "Bin", looking at the list of characters with that pronunciation under letter "B", I can assume that the most likely character is the first one!
86 火 9 炳 bēin bǐng bright, luminous; glorious.⁸
112 石 9 砭 bēin biān stone probe; pierce; counsel.⁸
116 穴 9 窆 bēin biǎn <wr.> bury; inter.⁶ to put a coffin into it's chamber in a tomb.⁹ to put a coffin in a grave.¹⁴
145 衣 14 褊 bēin biǎn narrow; cramped.⁶
154 貝 11 貶 贬 bēin biǎn demote, relegate; reduce, devalue; censure, depreciate.⁵
This was a much needed and helpful feature, and it is awesome that this got added on. Thanks Gene!
