I gave this topic its own post, so it does not get lost in another post and can be used as a reference in future by members. Please feel free to add to it.
Some forum members have asked if there is someone in the Kaiping-Taishan-Enping area that provides a service as a translator or driver with car or photographer or video for Overseas Chinese.
Based on the TripAdvisor attached recommendation (Item 2), I contacted Steven Guan at aznknight22@gmail.com or stevenguan08@outlook.com to quote me for a one day translator with car service for my pending Oct-Nov 2019 to my ancestral village and he quoted me a fair price (translator services including car for one 8 hour day at 1200 rmb, with petrol (gasoline) and tolls at an extra cost. This is for two people…my cousin and me. He arrives with a full tank and fills his tank up at the end of the day for the petrol cost and tolls apply if driving on the expressway but not on regular roads). I do not know if prices change for extra people.
Steven has been very prompt and courteous with email responses. He is based in downtown Kaiping.
I had also inquired about pricing for seals/chops and he is getting quotes for me. He even generously offered to go ahead and pay for the chops before my arrival and said I could reimburse him later…how many people do you know in your own country or overseas that would be willing to do this without even having met the other person? I advised him to hold off until a week or two before my arrival, so that I would pay for them myself upon arrival, so he will not be out of pocket.
Anyway, Steven is a translator and has his own car (holds up to 4 passengers). He can also go to your ancestral village and take photos and/or video and if you know a relative living in the village, he said he can get a video/photo of them or short interview video.
He also does business interpretation in which he takes clients to locate and meet factories in the greater Guangdong area.
For Zupu, he said he is not sure how successful it would be as the villagers treasure and hold Zupu very close to their chests and are more receptive if the overseas relative shows up at the village, so that may not be feasible
If any of you are interested, you can contact him directly…I imagine his price will depend on what detail or service you are looking for.
PS: As a side note, I also got a quote from another translator/car service but that other person quoted me approximate prices but when I asked for a firm price for an 8 hour day, their price went up 2-1/2 times, so ask for a firm price!
