Hi Jeremy, I kind of got lost in all the posts, but I did want to thank you for answering me and would appreciate it so much if you could take a photo of my dad's gravesite on your next visit.
I guess that people can feel the warm and kindness that both you and Amy Chin generate in your posts, so we try to put you together.
Thanks again, Fay Chee

Jeremy,
Are you kidding me? You happened upon my grandparent's graves!!!! That is freaky. I forget who is buried near them.
Other relatives of his are buried in an upstate NY cemetery.

Jeremy, I'm still shocked. So let me see if I have this correct about my grandfather's origins: Guangdong Province of Guangzhou Sunwui District = now Xinhui Gu Jing Township Shan Tou Village How do I figure out where this is located on a map? Is the map Greg submitted correct? And I can't find the village name on here: villagedb.friendsofroots.org/search.cgiThank you, Christie

Hi Christie, I don't know what it is, but every time I step into a cemetery... It happened before with my paternal grandmother's parents. We knew they were in Cypress, but had no idea where. My parents, grandfather and I were driving down one of the roads and I told them to randomly stop. And about 50 feet away was their gravestone. Also, there a very calming aura of peace and tranquility there, I may be weird, but I quite like it, haha. And the grounds are quite beautiful. Now back to you Guangzhou (廣州 trad.) (广州 simp.) is the capital city of Guangdong (廣東 trad.) (广东 simp.) province. Also, you will need to to know Jiangmen or Kongmoon (in Cantonese). It is a prefecture level city within Guangdong. Xinhui is within Jiangmen. Sunwui and Xinhui are the same exact characters (新會 trad.) (新会 simp.). The first pronunciation is Cantonese and the second is Mandarin. You are right that Gu Jing is the township. And we can be a lot more confident now that Shantou is the village. The pin that Greg placed on the map is accurate. To give a little context, this is a map of Guangdong. Number 18 is Jiangmen. The next map is of Jiangmen. Xinhui is labeled. The majority of overseas Chinese came from cities in Jiangmen. Most notably Taishan, Kaiping, Xinhui, Enping (which is why it's called Si Yi(四邑): Four Cities). Map 3 is of Gu Jing Zhen in relationship to various city centers. Lastly, here are the coordinates of your village according to google maps: tinyurl.com/y588u56j All the credit though, goes to gckimm for figuring out that the village is in Xinhui, Gu Jing (it helps tremendously to be fully literate in Chinese.) The village database is not fully updated with certain areas of Xinhui, which is why we were not able to find villages from Gu Jing there... Second update! I just found that there is a dedicated Xinhui area in evergreen. If you visit, you will find many Lums from shantou village/heung and gu jing in general, all buried in the same place. If you are really looking to do a deep dive into this, I would reach out to the Xinhui Association of NYC or the NYC Lum Association. You might be able to glean a lot of infoirmstion and maybe even a family tree book because it seems Gu Jing was a very popular place to export people to the states. Hope this all helps and makes things a little clearer. Any other questions, do not hesitate to ask. - Jeremy

Jeremy,
I still can't believe you found that gravesite.
I do have Lum relatives buried in another cemetery but I forget if it's Evergreen. I will have to look.
Thank you to you and gckimm for taking the time to figure this out and for you breaking it down for me with details, maps, coordinates, etc. I was confused with the Cantonese vs. Mandarin and all the names of places I am unfamiliar with. It means the world to me that you took the time to figure out where my family is from.
I have to review this information again and fully process it. I will let you know if I have any questions!
Thank you, Christie

Christie, It looks like you were on two posts receiving triple the help! haha I can't believe it either! Yeah, there seems to be a large Lum population from Xinhui in NYC. Do live in NY? I just saw another poster who just joined who is a Lum from Shantou. He said he actually visited the area, so if you are interested in really getting some primary insights try and message leeegan . It looks like he could be a great resource. I wouldn't be surprised with how large Gu Jing is that there are family tree books or jiapus/zupus that have your family in them. leeegan might know. Any questions at all, just let us know! I'm glad I was able to make the information a little more digestible for you. - Jeremy

Ref: Your Grandfather's name is: 社會 (Seh Wui), and someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but does the grandfather have two names, indicated by the character 號 (hao)? His hao is 時穖 with 翁 meaning "man"?
I'll translate the following as:
社會號 時機翁- In society he was being known as a Smart or Clever person
號hào -- In Chinese culture, refers to any name a person known in society(社會), as opposed to a birth name (which is given by the parents or other elders).

Jeremy,
We live in Virginia, which is where my grandfather settled as an adult, but we have several relatives in New York.
Oh, ok, thanks for the additional information. Interesting!

Hello Fonny,
Thank you for the correction! Ref: "In society he was being known as a Smart or Clever person." Is it common to have that kind of rhetoric on grave stones? So, does he actually have a Chinese name on the stone? If so, what is it?
