graham,
Since Liantang village is administered by the 莲塘镇社区居委会 [Liantang Town Community Neighborhood Committee], they can provide the contact information for the village chief of LianTang village and he can provide all the information you will need. I suggest having your cousin do this as soon as possible - in case they have to get a copy of the village genealogy book from a person who no longer lives in the village.

Henry, my cousin is rather elderly so I don't think she will be able to help much. We are going to try and phone the neighbourhood committee from here but haven't found any contact telephone numbers yet. Any idea of how to get that?

I arrived in Guangzhou yesterday evening. And then traveled to LianTang today. On arrival we asked some old ladies if they knew of our family. One of the ladies is married to a relative!
We were taken to an impressive building dedicated to the ancestors. And then the care takers contacted people who found relatives. And we have the family tree!

Henry, I didn't spend much time in Zhaoqing. But directly opposite the ancient city wall of Zhaoqing on the outside vs inside of the wall is a small shop selling both elaborate and simple ink stones. I have the shop's brochure but replying by phone browser doesn't seem to give me option of adding images.
I can try again when I'm back in Guangzhou.

Hi Tom
QQ email says it was sent to that address. I'll try again once I leave China tonight.
Also the Guangdong Museum runs a permanent exhibition on the ink stones. They must have several hundred on display.
Cheers

When I arrived in LianTang the administrative office was closed as it was a Sunday. The image below is the family shrine. It looks very new considering most of the village is much older and I guess paid for by relatives both locally and overseas. This is the generational poem according to my #1 2nd cousin. My first cousins have taken the character 汝 as their generational name which I'm told was correct. Mine is incorrect for unknown reasons. But Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Generation_name) says the poem for the Sung Dynasty is They're different but my wife says all the characters in the one I was given are in this list but I don't know why the order differs.

This was on the wall of the ancestral shrine. It was originally in one piece but was broken during the cultural revolution. Is it the family tree?
