Hello,. I've been doing Genealogy on my Chinese father's side, Jung. Iam at a dead end. I'm looking for any information on my Great Grandfather, Kwong How Jung, 1882-1969, born in ? China, buried in Norfolk, Virginia. He lived mainly in North Carolina and Virginia. I have very little information on him and my Grandfather. My Grandfather is known as Shakie Jung. But his real given name is a mystery. Could be THUE SHEK JUNG. 1906-1958, born in ? China, buried in Norfolk Virginia. Shakie married and had a son in Virginia,1940.

If your great grandfather's gravestone has Chinese characters - please post a photo so, we can see what is your ancestral village and his Chinese name. If you do not have a photo of the gravestone, would there be one from Find a grave ?
Also, if you send me your email address to [Tomclan@Gmail.com], I will send you spreadsheets on Chinese that emigrated to the US between 1881 - 1955. If you can find your great grandfather in these spreadsheets - they contain the Case ID number of the box & its location at the National Archives and records Administration (NARA) - where all the immigration information on him is stored.

Can you get a better picture? The top line is very important. All it can read is he came from Taishan.
How did you come up with THUE SHEK JUNG?

There are 3 different names, the one on the gravestone, and the two above.

Hi:
It appears that your grandfather, like most Chinese men in former times, had more than one Chinese name. The characters that your father got from his cousin shows one name, Jung Jeuk Sui (or Suey)鍾灼瑞, on the right side. This is obviously where the "Suey" on his headstone comes from. But the Chinese characters on the headstone are for a different name for your grandfather, Jung Mau Fun 鍾懋勳. My guess is that the latter is your grandfather's married name or ho 號, which would also be the name derived from the ancient name poem assigning a particular character to the names of all men who come from the same generation of the family.
The name on the left side of the image is the name of your great-grandfather, Jung Kwong How 鍾廣厚.
Jung Thue Sek looks like a name in the Toishan dialect. I am not an expert in the Toishan dialect, but I do not believe that the name Jung Thue Sek corresponds to any of the three names above. It could still be another name of your great-grandfather or even your grandfather, or it could be the name of someone else.
After doing a quick internet search, I found a post in a Chinese message board dating back to 2011 from someone wanting to know if anybody knew of a village in Toishan/Taishan where all (or most) of the residents were members of the Jung clan. Some people then responded that there was such a village and it was named Sar Kong. According to the information on this message board, there is a Jung ancestral temple in that village. That is the village you want to visit if you want to learn more about your roots.

Greg, that is interesting. Then Shakie was possibly a 'paper son'? Why else would he have 2 Chinese names? I'm at a loss of how to go about finding information on him, there's so many possibilities in names. It's been difficult finding info under Shakie Jung. When he married my GM did that automatically make him a US Citizen? I'm confused about the latter part, Shakie's last name of How being his married name. Would you please explain?

If you would all be so kind, I would like to try another source that has been a helpful source and has helped with connections in the past. My father's, cousin's Father, his Uncle Tong Wong Jung and his wife, Gook Gee Lee Jung. I would appreciate their history from their gravestones please. I will attach herewith if possible. Thank you.
