Hi there, I'm trying to see if I can locate my family's generation name poem, understanding that it can vary greatly by region and language. My family has ties to Hoiping/Kaiping (family village location) and Guangzhou, so we're Cantonese and Hoipingese speakers. My grandfather's name was Fong Kit Po. Not exactly sure how to go about my search but any help to put me in the right direction is much appreciated!

fong,
To find your family generation poem, you need to identify the Chinese name & location of your Fong ancestral village.
Your village genealogy book would probably contain your generation poem.

Hi fong,
My Fong side is from Hoiping/Kaiping and are/were Hoipingese speakers. Do you have the name of your family's village in Chinese characters as well as English letters? Also, do you have the Chinese characters for your grandfather's name? Better yet, do you have a photograph of his grave monument?
The Soo Yuen Benevolent Association of New England website, sooyuen.com, had a webpage of generation poems for the Fongs as well as the Kwongs and Louies. Unfortunately, the association no longer runs that website.

Hi Matthew,
Yes, they are. Where did you find them?
Hi fong,
The one for the Fongs is the poem in the middle. Does it match the sequence of generation characters of your Fong ancestors? (It doesn’t completely match in my case.)
Best regards, LJeung

Hi Matthew, Thanks for the link to the Internet Archive. I’d like to search for other material from Soo Yuen of New England. I tried doing this, but I wasn’t successful. What search criteria did you use? LJeung

Hi LJeung,
Sorry for the delayed response. The archive does not work well for searches, it works best for exact URL's. The reason I was able to find the generation poems was because I searched for "sooyuen.com" directly.
Hope this helps! Matthew

Thanks, Matthew. This definitely helps! When I searched for "sooyuen.com," I got snapshots of sooyuen.com at different dates and times on a Calendar of sooyuen.com. The last snapshot when the site was still up is on 2016 NOV 5 at 05:32:36. Seeing the button for "歷史" (History) on the menu bar at the top of the home page, I found the information I was looking for, the Chinese History page. I tried finding the generation poems on my own, as well, as I wanted to be able to copy individual characters from the poems. The menu bar didn't have a button for them, but I remembered the "Quick Menu 快選擇單" dropdown list on the right of the home page listed the "Ranking 班派" item, which was the link to the poems. Unfortunately, the link was broken, but fortunately, the URL box displayed the URL, www.sooyuen.com/namegeneration.htm. Searching for the URL at Archive.org took me to the Calendar of www.sooyuen.com/namegeneration.htm, which had one single snapshot on 2009 JAN 17 at 07:55:08. I finally found the poems page, 鄺氏子孫班派 (Kwong Clan Offspring Ranking - for some reason, the title is missing the other two Soo Yuen surnames, Fong and Louie), on my own and can now copy individual characters. Thanks again for your help! Now, I'm wondering why the sooyuen.com site has been down since November 5, 2016. LJeung
