sbchan,
There are approximately 500 Chan villages in Taishan county. if your granfather has Chinese characters on his gravestone - they may provide the name of your ancestral village.

Dear sbchan,
Even though you have the least of the least information in trying to locate your grandfather's hometown, do not lose heart. Elders on this website understand our filial wish to accomplish the unfulfilled wish of our departed grandfather/father - how they longed to go back, even once, to see their origin but could not make it during their life time. My father also came to Malaysia.
Spread out your quest and you never know you may find the exact village. If not, somewhere nearby. For my case, elders on this website have been responsive and helpful to whom I appreciate deeply. For the first time, I also get in contact with descendants of my father's fellow members who came from the same village. Information is still limited/uncertain but I get to know more and more about my father's background. This is already an achievement.
Like your grandfather, my father had not the finance to go back in the early years, life was too difficult then. Those who were financially capable, they went back through Hong Kong with a false document. When going back became official in 1991, my father was already in fragile health after an operation in 1983. We wanted to bring him back but it was not to be for my father so the topic was avoided discussion and dropped.
So whether I could finally find the exact village or not, I will still make a trip to a location which I think resembles the one. Without regret anymore.
Best wishes.
