Bak Shek was the market place for the 40? villages in the area. my mother in law said they went there about 3 times a week, the other days they went to the minor markets. The used to take a boat from Hargee to the markets. Other villages include Sungai, Suntong, Ng Yiel

Thanks everyone for your info on Bak Shek.
Helen, we have a cousin whose father came from Ng Yie - his surname was NG.
The Tung Jung Association of NZ is a very useful site.
On my father's side of the family, they originated from "Wong Tong" village Jung Seng. In Sydney Australia, their surnames were Gee or Chow or Chu. I have been told that Wong Tong village is about an hour by car from Canton City. Does anyone know anything more about Wong Tong village?

May be it is the Gee Wong Tong Village as per the village listing in the tung jung.org.nz page above. try making contact with the people from the Tung Jung Association - they are a real good help . The Ngs come from Ng Yiel - one of the bigger villages in the area.

Does anyone know where "Khar You" village is located in Jung Seng province ? If so, what are some surrounding villages, directions from Guangzhou, how far from Guangzhou? The "NG" family lived there before emigrating to Australia.

Sydney, I think your "Khar You" is Ngah Yiuh. It is located in the southeastern corner of Zengcheng/Jang Sihng district. As for "Wong Tong" it may be Naahm Haang or Sei Mohng Gong (Helen's Gee Wong Tong). It is not reliable to locate place names based on Romanized translations dependent upon village dialect pronunciations. My above names are based on Yale Standard Cantonese Romanization. The best is to use Chinese characters if you have them. Jang Sihng is an eastern surburb of Guangzhou (Canton).

Sydney, your "Wong Tong" (黃塘) is correct. It is about 15km west of Zengcheng City.

My grandmother was born in "Ung Yoo" village near Bak Shek village Jung Seng, Canton. Does anyone know "Ung Yoo" village & the surnames of that village? I can't decide if her surname was "Sing" or "Ean".

Not sure of that village name - but it sounds like "silver date?"

Have you worked out if the surname is Ng? If so, it's probably Ngah Yiel
