My mother used to live in Chung Tow Heong and Ah Hang villages in Lung Doo. She said that a large cemetery was located next to the main road which was right outside of the village wall of both villages. A narrow river ran alongside the road that led to the ferry crossing to Sek Kee which was the main city where they did their major shopping. I have a handdrawn map without any geographical landmards except the South China Sea and have tried to locate these villages and Lung Doo on current maps without success. Does anyone have the current names of the area and where they are located on a map? Thanks for your help in advance. I have been putting together a family history and was excited to find this site.

Hi Cheryl,
Please post the map on the Forum or send it to me at Tomclan@gmail.com and perhaps I have map coverage for the village.

Thank you for replying so quickly to my inquiry, Henry. The map is large and I will have to shrink it in order for it to fit in my scanner. I will try and get it done tomorrow and send it to you.

Hi Cheryl,
Since most people just have a page size scanner and the commercial scanning of a large map is rather expensive. Just take a photo of the map with a digital camera. Then send the JPG image.

Hi Cheryl,
If you decide to email the map to Henry, our map section moderator, could you post it her also so other members and visitors may benefit? If you don't have any online space for this purpose email or send me a pm and I'll upload it for you.
Thanks,

Henry,
I will take the photo tonight and see if I can upload it on the site. If not, I will email it to both you and Woodson. This is my first experience with this type of site so I'm learning as I go along. Thanks in advance for your patience.

Cheryl,
Your Chung Tow in Chinese is 涌é and is located just west of present-day Zhongshan City (your Sek Kee is the old name). The river you are talking about actually runs through the city and is quite far from Chung Tow. To see the Chinese characters goto View select Unicode (UTF-8) for Character Encoding.

Thanks for the info. Do you happen to know the name of the river? I have had problems getting the map onto the site. My son is home for the weekend and is trying to help me get it on the map. I as previously stated, I am new at this so I apologize for the delay. I am learning a lot and hopefully will get better at this soon. Please use the map as a resource for anyone in the area. I am interested in the geography, names of the nearby rivers, mountains, etc. Thanks for all the help.

Dear Twoupman,
Do you know if this is the Pearl River that runs through the old Sek Ki?

Cheryl,
There are many fingerling tributaries to the Pearl River waterway system forming what is called the Pearl River Delta of Guangdong Province. I am looking at a map of the area, and it shows the Pearl River itself runs through Guangzhou (aka Canton), the provincial capital of Guangdong Province. The "rivers" in and around Shekki (aka Zhongshan City) are actually tributaries or smaller "rivers" of the Pearl River waterway system. These little rivers or tributaries have names (Chinese names, of course), but are not identified as such on the larger map I am looking at. Perhaps Henry can identify that body of water you are looking at.
Hope this helps.
Raymond

Cheryl,
The river through the city of Zhongshan (Sehk Keih) is called Shiqi (Sehk Keih) River. The Pearl River is far away in Guangzhou (Gwong Jau_Canton City). The western shores of the mouth of the Pearl River is just east of Zhongshan City.

Dear Raymond,
Thank you for the information. Am I correct that the Shiqi River is one of the Pearl River tributaries as you mentioned in your first message and not a separate river?

It should be pointed out the Shiqi River through Zhongshan city flows in a southwesterly direction into the Mo River which discharges directly into the South China Sea. It has nothing to do with the Pearl River which is in Guangzhou. Suggest you take a look at a map of the Pearl River delta region to familiarize yourself with the Zhongshan area.
