narc3, That family surname is 洗, pronounced Xin in Cantonese and Xian in Mandarin as a surname, not the same as yours. The word 洗 more commonly means to wash, sai in Cantonese and xi in Mandarin

Hello Harc3, Where are you hanging up? What page are you having problems? Can you post a screen shot of the web page you are having problems? Please private email me if you prefer not to post on-line. Use addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10367 to take a screen image is you use Firefox. If you use Internet Explorer, use the Vista Sniping tool or XP version of the screen print www.fiastarta.com/PrtScr/. Without knowing Chinese, I have had initial trouble getting onto the web site and want to work out the algorithm for other non-Chinese-literate forum users. Doug

Hi laohuaqiao,
It seems like you can read and write Chinese. I know that Ahgin is also literate in Chinese.
Can either of you find where you can print the Jiapu/Zupu's? I know there is a print icon but I have tried to click every link and translate every small section to find a easier way to print to my hard drive, all without success. It is very tedious without knowing Chinese.
Also, I hear that the Guangzhou library has Jiapu/Zupu's. Is there a reference or a hint of future access to these sources in the web site?

Hi Doug,
Do you know if there are access and copying restrictions at the Guangdong Library? My nephew went there from Taishan and tried to copy an entire clan zupu, however, they would only allow him to copy one third and that was it.
A friend of mine in Beijing was copying material for me also and was not allowed to copy the entire document. So I believe there may be some sort of restriction on copying books from public libraries in China.
I am wondering if this applies to the genealogy books of the Shanghai Library that have been copied by Ancestry.com. If they allow access to make a complete copy - I suggest jumping on it now and not wait - thinking that you can do it at your leisure - because they can limit access or take the zupu(s) offline at any time.

Henry, I did copy all 14 books for the Yang clan and both books for the Xie clan from www.jiapu.cn. I am encouraged your relative found some books in the Guangzhou Library. I have a non-clan cousin planning to go to Guangzhou to help me look for the Zhou clan. However, the copying limitation concerns me. I will ask if he knows about these limitations. I agree with you about the current status of the on-line access....Make hay while the sun is shining! Harc3, I am glad you got into www.jiapu.cn! On another post you mentioned your mother is from Nanjiang. Are you able to access any Jiapu/Zupu's from her home province? Are there more or less number of Jiapu/Zupu's than Guandong? Doug

Doug,
Yes, my nephew tried asked another friend to go to the Guangdong Library to copy more of the zupu, but, the librarian realized that what was going on when his friend wanted to copy the 2nd third of the same zupu within the same week.
I think as you start to collect zupu(s) - you will soon learn that they are not easily found - especially the older ones. So my suggestion is to get while the getting - is good.

Henry,
Why do you surmise that they limited the copying to only a small portion of the Zupu?

Doug,
I think they believe that allowing somebody to copy the complete genealogy book - then there will be a black market for selling genealogy books.
Copying only portions allows people who are going to just copy those pages pertaining to the line of descent. But, there are people, like me, that want to have the complete zupu because it will allow the cross checking of the zupu, both the horizontal and vertical lineages, and allow for a broader chance to link into the lineage on either the horizontal or vertical lineages from other zupu(s).

Henry,
Interesting concept. I ran across a 32 book Zupu on Jiapu.cn for Zheng (maternal grandmother) and rather than copying every book, I am looking to copy only the line of descent. That is because of laziness on my part. Your comment makes me wonder if I should copy the whole thing. I am not as advance in the understanding of the Zupu's as you.

Doug,
In my experience with zupu(s), I notice that a clan zupu usually cascades down a line of descent/pedigree within a rather narrow horizontal band of lineage segments. This is probably necessary to contain the width to a reasonable degree and to stay within a geographic area. But, there seems to be overlaps in the horizontal lineages between zupu(s) from adjoining geographic areas. This overlap in lineages helps to connect lineages, to fully populate lineages, and is good for the mutual confirmation of 2 or more related zupu(s).
The bottom line is to try and get the complete zupu - in this context, more is definitely "better".

FYI: a message from Ancestry.com re closure of jiapu.cn: Dear Robert, We appreciate your message. Unfortunately, there are no current plans to bring back jaipu.cn. The site did not do as well as anticipated, but we may try again in the future. Ancestry.com still has access to the records from the Shanghai Library, but they will not be released again for an undeterminable amount of time. I believe that you can still find the information at the Shanghai Library, but you would have to physically go to the library to find the information. If there is anything else with which we might assist you, please let us know. Julie Member Solutions Ancestry.com ancestry.custhelp.com/
