Douglas,
Indeed, the overseas Chinese is a force to be reckoned with. I do have a little chuckle from time to time, thinking about places such as the temples at Glebe, and South Melbourne. When first build, it was not prime estate -- "good for the Chinamen to build their strange house of worship or club house". Now, the land alone is worth a few millions.
It's good to hear that your daughter is at Peking University -- a very prestigious Uni, even our Kevin could not get in to study (I think).
I guess I have a soft spot for Hoiping. I like the quiet life, and Hoiping offers that. Chungshan is closer to the Big City of HK, and it's getting very modern indeed.
Enjoy. Regards, Ah Gin

Ah Gin, Sze Yup Temple is indeed sitting on very choice real estate. It is relaxing and quiet sitting under a tree on any sunny day. Just like the Temple, Haymarket, where Chinese businesses flourish, was a dump when the produce wholesale market was moved to Flemington. Vacant shops could be had for a song. Even before the market's relocation, the place was deserted after dark save for a few Chinese eating out in the few restaurants which catered for them. Nobody anticipated the changes in the political scene, the influx of new migrants and tourism. I wish I had money enough for a deposit then. My daughter really feels at home in Beijing, she is motivated in the midst of the high achievers from many countries. She is very confident of her Mandarin now. At the moment she is organising the Australian section of a Cultura Fest. staged by overseas students at Peking Uni. Sadly, she is not getting any help from the Aust. Embassy, Tourism Aust. Chamber of Commerce, or Trade Office. One big brickwall. I am very annoyed and angry when people exaggerate the human rights abuse, especally by the pro-Tibet lobby, and say Chinese people are being brainwashed in China. China now ranks 5th. in the world in terms of young people wanting to study there. Apparently, the exchange students, too, are in danger of being brainwashed. Please see my posts and links in another thread News Links.

Douglas,
In case your daughter have not yet approached "Our Kevin", I suggest she does so. Suggest she drops an email to the local Embassy, Cc to Kevin, outlining her aim etc. Gee, after all, she is trying to promote this Sun-burn country of ours. Surely it's better than the series of "where the hell are you?"ad. Better understanding of Australia through this method is surely a good thing for all?
Re: version of history, the media treatment of issues etc. I am not sure to laugh or cry sometimes. Knowing just a bit about the Modern History of China, recall a certain country forced China to sell its tea, in return for a lovely smoke? Funny thing is, it is the same tea that they threw over board at Boston. And that resulted in George losing the Colony? Ah, history and the media.

Ah Gin, It maybe a little late to call on Kevin R for help. In fact the whole show is put together by Asian-Aussies, including a Chinese-Kiwi who is sharing the booth. The girls were promised a supply of Vegemite by newcomers to the Uni. whose parents are arriving soon. They are making lamingtons amongst other things. It is not "where the bloody hell are you ?" It is "Where the bloody hell is everybody ?"

Douglas,
Good to hear Aussie & Kiwis working together. Ah, Vegemite & lamingtons -- a good staple, healthy food. Re: the "Hell" series of Ads. Shows how effective that has been on me!
Till the next posting, regards from the South. Ah Gin

Ah Gin, "Where the bloody hell is everybody" is my protest for the lack of support from the expat. Aussies in Beijing for Peking U's Cultural Fest.
