I am new to this forum. Woodson very kindly posted a jpeg of my grandfather's headstone in Location, Location, Location. I would appreciate any help or suggestions on how to proceed in finding my grandfather's family. Toy Suen Sing was born in 1884 in Yin Yee Lai Taishan Guangdong. He immigrated to Montreal, Quebec (Year???). He did not marry in Montreal, but he had 4 children between 1928-1931 (my father being one of the children). Toy Suen Sing died in 1959 in Montreal. Any advice would be most appreciated. Sue

Hi Sue, Welcome to the Forum. Based upon your grandfather's name and known village location, I suggest that you contact my nephew who lives in Taicheng: siyigenealogy.proboards28.com/index.cgi?board=names&action=display&thread=821He can go to your ancestral village and talk to the villagers to determine what relatives are still living there and whether a family genealogy books is available that has your family lineage and he can have it copied. I suggest you provide him with a photo of the gravestone and the Chinese names of your father's siblings and any other relevant information. Please ask my nephew will keep some of this information confidential - so it can be used to verify villager's claims that they are related to you - real cousins would know this information. Henry

Hi Sue, Your grandfather's village is not that far from my home village. In fact, about half of my relatives are Toy (or Choy) from that area or married to a Toy there. Contacting Henry's nephew is the sure way to proceed, but I will check with my relatives if by any chance they are familiar with anyone from that village or even heard of your grandfather's name. What are the chances that you and I turn out to be cousins? Many of the Toys from the region settled in Chicago, maybe that's how your grandfather made his way to Montreal. By the way, the Chinese characters from which the headstone was made were beautifully written, no ordinary person could have written them. There may be an interesting story behind it by itself.

Sue,
If possible, please post a photo of your grandfather's gravestone with Chinese characters, the Forum will then try to help you.
My Taishan nephew moved to Hong Kong 2 years ago and no longer does Chinese genealogy research.

Henry: Thanks for the maps. I am hoping to find someone who lives close to my ancestral village to contact me and let me know how I can get a copy of my Grandfather's family records. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Sue

Sue,
Your hope of finding a person near your ancestral village is rather unrealistic.
If you are serious & willing to pay for a researcher to go to your ancestral village & try to find a copy of your village genealogy book - please send me an email at " Tomclan@Gmail.com " and I can help you make such arrangements.
Henry
