Huang/Hwang/Wong (黄) Clan Progenitor Forum
Greetings Siyi Genealogy forum members and visitors:
My brother, Joe Wong, and I, Ben Lee, have been invited by Henry Tom to serve as the co-moderators for the Huang/Hwang/Wong (黃) Clan thread of the Clan Progenitor References forum.
Henry has placed his faith in a couple of genealogy newbies with only a few months of experience under their belts, but with a strong desire to share in their growing passion for learning the genealogy of their family surname, (黃). Our hope is that from our struggles, others can learn right along with us and/or can help mentor and guide us.
The purpose of this first section is to introduce ourselves, state our goals, define the scope of effort, and list potential resources.
Our qualifications are:
1) We are Huangs ( we will use the pinyin romanization name from here on) – although you may have surmised correctly that we’ve had some name issues since our family immigrated to the US,
2) We’ve gotten the genealogy bug, itch, obsession, …
3) We’ve recently (last Oct 2008) visited the Siyi area on a family trip and were fortunate enough to obtain a Huang Clan zupu from our father’s Tung Hing (æ±æ…¶) Village in Taishan (å°å±±),
4) Brother Joe can read, write and speak Chinese (I can’t, but would like to learn)
5) I’m computer savvy (Joe isn’t, but I intend to teach him)
Goals for this thread:
To quote Henry Tom:
“The purpose of identifying these clan progenitor ancestors (references ) is to provide nodes that can be used to link family jiapu branches into the overall structure of the clan lineage hierarchy from village all the way up to and across the national level. This enables people to link clan lineages at various levels and to trace back thousands of years.â€
Also moderators will “post the hierarchical framework of the progenitors for their specific clan and their role will be to facilitate discussions about how to populate this framework within the context of lineage resources that all Forum members are willing to shareâ€.
The product of this tread will be to establish a nodal framework of progenitor names, correlated with different levels of community hierarchy, village, town, city, county and province. This product is a living document, with changes and modifications made as better information is discovered.
Scope:
The geographical scope of this thread shall concentrate on the Siyi area of China, although overlaps may be unavoidable with neighboring areas.
The lineage scope shall be concentrated on the number one Huang progenitor in Guangdong and lower. Note that we will avoid going too low on the lineage line to preclude privacy issues. Lineage information higher then the original Guangdong progenitor may be provided, but will not be emphasized.
The order of development shall be top down. The actual framework structure and outline are still to be determined.
Potential Resources:
1. Our Huang Clan zupu. My brother has already analyzed/interpreted the zupu for our lineage and has pretty much established the trace all the way up 30 generations to the number one Guangdong progenitor Huang Ju Zheng (黄居æ£). The zupu also shows the lineage up another 110 generations to Huang-di, (黃å¸/é»„å¸ huángdì) or the Yellow Emperor. Our clan zupu provides references to some key localities of the ancestors and some migrational information. This zupu will serve as the initial primary resource to start the progenitor nodal framework.
2. Other Huang websites. Any links or references made from other websites will be pre-approved by the other website webmasters.
3. Member and visitor contributions.
4. Other literature acquired by my brother and myself in the future.
On the next posting we hope to show the first few generations of the Huang Clan in Gungdong and the initial migratory location information for these early ancestors. Finding names for the ancestors is half the battle. Finding where they settled and migrated to is another.
We look forward to developing the Huang Clan Progenitor nodal lineage tree(s) and sharing with others what we have learned. It will be neat to find some long lost relatives in this endeavor. Of course at some level we are all related!
