Hi im Junior and im looking information about the lastname Achon that was my great grandfather lastname he went to Cuba with a brother the information i got is that they came from Guangzhou (Canton) if somebody has any information about this lastname or where i can find information please let me know my email is rodriguez_sydney@hotmail.com

I am also interested in this topic. I just found out my husband's paternal grandmother's younger brother went to Cuba from Xinhui, Guangdong in the 1920s early 1930s.
I am still learning more, but what little I know is his surname was Ko 高 who left China prior to the Sino Japanese war. He was saving all his money in a bank which went under and resulted in him losing his savings.
It was said he died in the 1960s in Cuba. It is not known if he married or had children. Still in the early stages of learning more about this gentleman.

Base on the Canadian Head Tax data, most of the Ko 高 from 新會 came from the following villages: 1. 那伏 Law Fook / Low Fook / No Fook / No Fock (~70%) 2. 龍泉 Lung Chun (~20%) 3. 古井 Ko Jang / Koo Jung / Ko Chung (~10%). The Min Chih Tang in Havana (古巴 洪門民治黨) and the Chinese Benevolent Association in Havana (中華會館) will likely be able to provide additional information by last names. The Chinese Cemetery in Havana (中華總義山) harbours the remains of Chinese pioneers.   These photos were taken by the author in Jan. 2013. |
