I ran across this advertisement from MyHeritage.com for DNA testing. It gives an idea of the cost. Of course, you always need more than one person's DNA since you are comparing at least two people's genes. www.familytreedna.com/landing/my-heritage.aspx

Hi Doug, Here is an article I stumbled across: Genetic relationship of populations in ChinaAbstract Despite the fact that the continuity of morphology of fossil specimens of modern humans found in China has repeatedly challenged the Out-of-Africa hypothesis, Chinese populations are underrepresented in genetic studies. Genetic profiles of 28 populations sampled in China supported the distinction between southern and northern populations, while the latter are biphyletic. Linguistic boundaries are often transgressed across language families studied, reflecting substantial gene flow between populations. Nevertheless, genetic evidence does not support an independent origin of Homo sapiens in China. The phylogeny also suggested that it is more likely that ancestors of the populations currently residing in East Asia entered from Southeast Asia. Another site advertising their DNA profiling: Family Tree DNAclick. They only have 300k profiles and no Asian specific services. I am glad they are bringing the understanding about mitochondrial DNA and maternal lines to the public. Please be aware that genealogy research is not always about DNA and 'blood' relatives, but about family relationships. But that topic is for another post later.

I have matched to a heck of a lot of profiles at 23andme but mostly Caucasians due to my dad's genes. I have however found a variety of Asians there, though I haven't been able to figure out our relationships, just that we are somehow distantly related. One is a "fourth-cousin" or some genetic distance similar to a relationship of fourth-cousin, and I have a theory as to how we are related (loosely based on naming patterns of my grandma's mom's family) but it's really hard to prove without extensive genealogy research. The hard part is that his folks were from Trinidad, and I've run across quite a few Chinese-Trinidadian mixes now who I am trying to help, and Trinidad's archives suck! They have pretty much nothing online, and ordering records is reputed to be a difficult process. So we keep trying...it's another learning curve in Chinese emigration. The Chinese I have found who are actually Hoisanese on 23andme are maybe 3 people. But those are the ones who actually know enough to say they are Hoisanese. There can be more who are just "Asian" and have not specified their own ethnic or geographic breakdowns for whatever reason. A lot of mixed Chinese don't even know what "Guangdong" is, so there you go!
