My GreatGrandfather was Wong Kee (as written on all documentation I have found) and on his marriage certificate in New Zealand 1896 he gave Wong Kee Lee as his father's name and Mary Wong as his mother's name. (I am aware that the western writing of his name may be back to front e.g Kee Wong, Kee Lee Wong)
: : His birthplace ws given only as Canton and he was a medical man.
: : Family history has it that once he arrived in New Zealand he was unable to practice medicine as his credentials were not recognised in the western world so he practiced herbal medicine. It is said he died days before getting permission to finally practice.
: : What I would like to find out is, is there anywhere in China that one could find out if medical men were registered in any way in Canton in the 1800's. Also have a query as to what surname would have been ggrandfathers as have conflicting information some say Wong other's say Kee and yet others say Lee which is what GGrandather changed too legally in NZ after the birth of his first child my granfather who was registered as Willie Wong Lee. : : Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi Lyn - The last name is bound to be Wong, and probably from Zengcheng. Have you been in contact with the Tung Jung association in New Zealand? Do you have photos of any gravestones with Chinese characters?

Hi Lyn, Welcome to the Forum. I agree with Helen Wong, your great grandfather was probably a Wong and since he settled in New Zealand - there is a strong chance that he was from Zhengcheng county. If your great grandfather is buried in New Zealand, can some body take a digital photo of his gravestone - which would probably have the Chinese characters for his name and ancestral village. Then you could post it here on the Forum where we have have Chinese literate members that can help. Here are the instructions for posting an image on the Forum: siyigenealogy.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=comment&action=display&thread=421Henry

...I suggest you contact the administrator for this Forum to forward your information to lyn - it has been 10 years since the last posting and lyn may not be checking the Forum... Alas, the administrator systems-operator Woodson does not moderate this forum anymore. He has moved onto other projects since 2014 and has allowed this Forum to be on 'automatic-drive' You will have to view the member-in-question's profile yourself and hope that there is a working email address with which you can contact. Just checked: there was no contact left and us moderators have no access to user profiles other than what the normal members have.
