My grandfather came to British Malaya in the early 1900. He was from Shunde, Guangzhou. I just got a copy of the family Jiapu from my cousin a few days ago. I will be going to Shunde next week to trace my roots. Can anyone tell me from the chinese script, the exact location or village in Shunde my ancestors came from? Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks. Attachments:

First I would like to thank Henry for hosting this site and tyuti1668 for the direction to my ancestor village. I am now in Guangzhou. I managed to locate my ancestor village/hall on Sunday, 15 Nov with the assistance of a friend in Foshan. The village elders were very happy to see me and requested for a copy of my Jiapu. The Zupu in the ancestor hall has been destroyed and they are now trying to reconstruct it from the individual family Jiapu. My copy of the Jiapu contains a lot of information which they dont have i.e. location of the ancestor graves and others. I gladly gave them a copy of my Jiapu. I have not manages to trace any of my relatives there. Possible next trip.

That's great news that you are still there. And lucky for you that you can view this website. I had problems when I was in Beijing in June. Enjoy the rest of your trip.
It's sad that the zupu have been destroyed in the homeland. The ones that have gone overseas are so valuable. let's hope those who have them realise the importance of it all. I'm sure the younger generation would not really have any ideas as to the historic value.

Hi fellow Siyi Genealogists,
Both my maternal grandfather and his father were born in a place called Shayongfang (沙湧坊), Leliu (勒流) in Shunde. Unfortunately, I have not been able to find this place in the recently re-established Village Database (villagedb.friendsofroots.org) nor on Google Maps. Have any of you heard of this place?
Wishing you all Happy Holidays, LJeung

LJeung,
Your ancestral village is not contained in the Village Database as it only covers the 4 counties of: Toishan, Hoiping, Sunwui, and Chungshan.
Shunde is one of 5 districts of Foshan municipality. Leliu is a sub district of Shunde.
I suggest contacting " webmaster@gdfao.gd.gov.cn " for a link/contact information to the Overseas Chinese Affairs Office of Leliu or Shunde to ask for a map showing the location of Shayongfang (沙湧坊)village.
Henry

LJeung, where did you get the Chinese characters for Shayongfang (沙湧坊)? 湧 may not be correct. There are many villages with the 涌 character.

LJeung, where did you get the Chinese characters for Shayongfang (沙湧坊)? 湧 may not be correct. There are many villages with the 涌 character. Dear lachinatown, I got them from a document in my grandfather's INS A-File, a document called a statutory declaration, which my grandfather had submitted in lieu of birth and marriage records that he could not obtain from the governments of China and Hong Kong at the time. In this declaration, he writes that as to the best of his knowledge, belief, and information, he was born in Sha Chung Fong, Lark Lau Heung, Shun Tak District, Kwangtung, China (中国,廣東省,順德縣,勒流鄉,沙湧坊), my grandmother married him there, and his father was born there. That is, he writes the same name three times in the document. He was a colonel and former pilot in the Republic of China Army, so I assume that he was fairly literate. However, since the name Shayongfang is comprised of three characters, then perhaps, it was not the name of a village, but it was that of a street or neighborhood in Leliu. What are some villages in Leliu with the 涌 character? LJeung

湧 and 涌 are the same according to Matthews dictionary. 涌 is being used now. One dictionary has pronunciation (Cantonese): 湧=Yung, 涌=Chung Therefore the question is was this the way it was written on the document?
Villages: 石涌, 上涌 (2 locations), 下涌, 众涌, 大苏涌, 涌口, 槎涌, 红涌, etc., in 勒流 sub-district.
