Henry is an amazing source of information. After reading so many of his posts, I happened to be on the USA East Coast last winter and made a 'pilgrimage' to meet Henry in person.

He and his wife graciously arranged accommodations for me (I am a stranger to him except for the small contributions I have posted on this forum). I learned what an interesting person he and his wife are, and the breadth of knowledge he possesses outside of genealogy. He has studied genealogy only for a few years!

Not wanting to hijack this thread, Henry also provided me with an image of my clan's Zhou Totem, much like he did for Lim.

I asked a relative to translate the Lee totem pole for me. To the best of her knowledge, she said that the original Lee family clan name was the combination of the characters for "wood", "son" and "tiger", each character meaning something significant in the overall Chinese character for Lee. Today the Chinese character for the Lee family clan name is written only with the combination of the characters for "wood" on top and "son" on the bottom. "Tiger" is no longer a part of the Lee name, and she speculated that "tiger" was later positioned on the side (as in the totem) and eventually dropped altogether to simplify the Lee family clan name.

To read the Chinese characters please select "View", "Encoding", "More" and "Unicode (UTF-8)".

It is claimed that the Huang’s Tuteng (黃姓圖騰) or Coat of Arms is as follow:



However according to Ng Poh Sing, my friend from Brunei, the Huang Clan’s tuteng or Coat of Arms should be '黄鸟/黄鹂 Oriole Bird'. According to him a section from the research article 黄氏族源初探 by clan historian/researcher Huang Yupan 黄玉磐 (in Chinese) read:

"１、黄，因生以赐姓
　　史学家吕振羽说：“在原始社会某原始群团猎取某种生物为其食物的主国来源，因而被其他群团称为某种生物的名称”（《简明中国通史》）。黄氏先族群团猎取黄鸟（黄莺、或称黄鹂）为主要食物，后来由于生产工具进步，猎取更多样食物，便觉得原来常食的黄鸟会唱歌跳舞，是精灵可爱的吉祥物，便产生崇敬的感情，于是禁止捕吃黄鸟，逐渐认为黄鸟是自己的祖先化身或转世而来的，相信它有超自然的神力，会对本氏族全体成员起保护作用，尊崇为守护神，这样黄鸟便成为黄氏族群崇拜的图腾。其他群团便称呼黄氏族群为“黄鸟图腾”。如“食蝉的舜的先族，便被称穷蝉图腾；食三青鸟的西王母群团，便被称为三青鸟图腾”（《简明中国通史》）。
　　１９６３年—１９７９年，山东省莒县陵阳河的大汶口文化遗址出土的“陶尊”，高６０厘米，刻画着“阳鸟负日飞行图”，据碳—１４测定，约为公元前三千年遗物。距今约五千年前，创造大汶口文化的是各支鸟氏族，崇拜鸟，以鸟为图腾。那负日飞行的“阳鸟”，正是氏族奉祀的图腾。
　　中华各民族都有图腾崇拜。如：“满族、朝鲜族为鹊较腾，维吾尔族为狼图腾，藏族为猴或海狗图腾，蒙族为苍色狼或白色鹿图腾……东南沿海地区百越族各支有对蛇的图腾崇拜……
　　苗、瑶、畲、水、侗、僮等各族都奉盘瓠（狗）为图腾”（《简明中国通史》）。
　　“图腾”，是美洲印第安语音译，其本义指原始社会族群，认为与本氏族有血缘关系的某种动物或自然物，就为本氏族或部落的图腾，摆在祭坛上奉祀，或装饰在旗帜上，为本氏族的族徽和血缘标记的姓氏。恩格斯说“摩尔根《古代社会》：在美洲各地土著中，所有的氏族，都是以某种动物或无生物命名，从没有以个人命名的。如在新墨西哥的摩基村的印第安人中，氏族成员称他们就是本氏族命名的那种动物的子孙”（《家庭•私有制和国家的起源》）。这与远古中华民族各氏族姓氏来源完全一样。
　　黄氏先族就是以黄鸟图腾的名称作为本氏族的姓氏，称为黄鸟氏。如《诗经、商颂、玄鸟》诗云：“天命玄鸟，降而生商”。商的父系祖先是契，契的母亲简狄吞燕卵而生契。所以说：商出自玄鸟氏，也是图腾名称为姓。又如“黄帝先族有虫乔氏，黄帝少典之族有熊氏，神农先族神龙氏，尧的先族有娥氏，舜的先族穷蝉氏”，都是以图腾名称为姓。（《简明中国通史》）。
　　黄氏先族“因生于赐姓”，简称黄姓，沿用至今已五千多年，“在汉人姓氏中，如：马、牛、羊、邬、鸟、凤、梅、花、叶、山、水、云、石、毛、龙、冯、风等，都是图腾名称的遗留”（《简明中国通史》）。"

According to Ng Poh Sing, some scholars like Wang Dayou 王大有, author of 《三皇五帝时代》(and apparently the compiler of the book on Chinese surname totems) believed the sacred tortoise to be the totem of the Yellow Emperor's tribe. However the author of the book on Chinese totems have got the following facts wrong:
1.Huang surname is not the other name for the Yellow Emperor’s tribe.
2.Huang surname itself did not originate with the Yellow Emperor.

The Han Chinese always refers themselves as descendants of the Yellow Emperor or Huang Di (黄帝): (Wo men shi Huang Di de zisun) "我們是黃帝的子孫". If that is so, so would be the surname Huang (黄). It is said that the progenitor of Huang was Huang Yun/Hui Lian 黄云/惠连. However there are quite some differences in the pedigree line from Huang Di to Huang Yun/Hui Lian. There is a Huang discussion group in Facebook which I belong that had deliberated on this and other matters.
