Thanks, Helen. Also, besides cleaning the negative as mentioned in this link, it is important to make sure scanner glass is clear and free of lint too.

Thanks Helen for the post, I would like to add a bit more on this very important stage of preserving the irrecoverable past.
I used a slide scanner, commercially available at around US$80 or less from ebay or trademe to copy slides. It turned out that there was software which would invert the slides into colour slide negatives which could be printed.
This led me to try to copy the black and white negative, as well as the colour negatives which I inverted. It came out as a positive print. It needed enhancing which can be done in a easy way by using picasa or other free software. The best software is photoshop if you can get your hands on one.
I was extremely pleased at the enhanced results, some were better than the original and it was easy, although time consuming, to retouch out scratches, stains, molds,and with photoshop you can cut out persons or object. All the software will brighten dull or dark pictures, increase or decrease contrast, crop photos, etc.
