frieder1ch,
The normal Google Maps will also provide you with the Simplified Chinese characters and Pinyin romanizations of places in China.
Try pasting in: "Kaiping, Jiangmen, Guangdong, China" or "Xinhui, Jiangmen, Guangdong, China".

Thank you Helen for the display of the bi-lingualPearl River Delta Map. My own village is further south west of the map in Haiyen. My long lost cousin living in London is going back to visit the Fung village in July 2012 which is a 15 minute drive from our Chan village in Haiyen, she was born there and hopefully will be able to guide us to the village proper.
I will probably take the direct AirAsia flight to Kuala Lumpur from Christchurch, spend a few weeks home, then fly to Macau/Hong Kong/Guangzhou/Shenzen which are directly linked to KL. May spend a few days in Taisan staying in the hotel recommended by Henry then hire a van for a few days touring the villages.
Any tips from those who have done this before would be appreciated

Hi Chansomvia,
I suggest flying directly to the Baiyun airport in Guangzhou and taking the bus to the Taishhan bus station. Call my nephew and he can meet you and he will take good care of you in guiding you around. If you need a van, he has a friend who has a nice van that you can charter.

Thanks Henry and tyuti1668 for your suggestion of starting from Baiyun airport and go to Taicheng. It would be good to charter Shicheng's friends van for a couple of days to explore Haiyen, we would probably stay in Taicheng and Haiyen for two days in each place and Kaiping for another few days. It would be nice to have an airconditioned room to stay as we will fly from the Southern hemisphere in winter and arrive at the hottest time of the year in China. Any suggestion to finding suitable lodging in the small places would be appreciated. We usually stay at the Star Hotel in Guangzhou, the station for trains to and from Hong Kong is within walking distance but the hotel supplies a free shuttle to the train station. The hotel has an excellent 2nd floor restaurant ( 10% discount for those who stay there) and there is also a very good restaurant next to the hotel. NZ Joe
