A corollary of my study of Chinese American genealogy is the inquiry into Chinese and Western history for that period. My ancestors participated in one of the Chinese Diasporas that coincided with the fall of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1912). This video discusses just one of the many forces (foreign intervention with the Qing Dynasty) which contributed to the environment encouraging the diaspora. What makes this video even more compelling is an attempt to discuss the reasons for the intervention from both the Chinese and Western point of view. I know that this century of humiliation continues to weigh heavily on the psyche of modern China.
You can rent it for U$ 1.99 from Amazon.
China's Century of Humiliation: A comparative history of China and the West. Directed by: Mitch Anderson. Runtime: 1 hour 17 minutes. Release year: 2011. Studio: Deep Waters Films

I am not easily manipulated on nationalism or dance to the tune of the mainland government, but I get upset on the question of China's century of humiliation.
I still feel the pain when I see the destruction done by the joint Anglo-French force in the two Opium Wars and the Boxer Uprising. When I see the ruins of Yuan Ming Yuan in Beijing, I feel like a kick in the gut. I can never forgive the Elgin gang which was responsible for the theft of the Elgin Marbles of Greece, and burning of Yuan Ming Yuan and more.
This is not ancient history, it happened in my grandfather's time. I pmomised myself if I ever get to see the Elgin gang's graves, I will piss on them.

Hi Helen, I am not sure about the availability of the DVD in HK. I have about 24hrs. to explore HK before flying out, and there are two more engagements between now and then.
I'd love to watch the DVD myself. It maybe available to purchase on line. Or else I can make a purchase request to my library if there is full detail available.

Dear Colleagues,
Looks like Amazon is the only source for this DVD (NTSC format) - the other sources will have copies at the end of January 2012.
I suggest checking carefully for the PAL format that is used in China, Australia, and New Zealand?
There are DVD players that accept both formats.
Henry

It finally came out on You Tube. Consider watching or downloading it in case the uploader violated a copyright:
